It syncs to my computer and plays my music but will not connect to the USB interface in my car. My wife's IPOD, which seems to be identical, works fine. Any ideas? more

Jul 30, 2012 5:51 PM in response to JCox902by Bilbo_cheshire,Can you check the iPod software version in iTunes summary page of both iPods? either 1.1.2, 2.01 or 2.0.4
There are a few post wrt BMW audio issues, but unfortunately no resolution, my suspicion is that it works on earlier iPod software.(ie vers 1.1.2 or earlier.

Jul 30, 2012 6:20 PM in response to Bilbo_cheshireby JCox902,Both the IPODs I've tried are 1.1.2 One works, the other doesn't. I can't find any difference. I was hoping there might be a setting I needed to change.

Can you do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem but helps in troubleshooting, especially if your BMW audio is having problem writing the iPod.
Have a nice day!

Jul 30, 2012 7:33 PM in response to Bilbo_cheshireby JCox902,I did the diagnostic and everything looks good. I didn't see anything that looked like a problem. Only 1 realloc and all the other numbers seemed reasonable.

Jul 30, 2012 7:49 PM in response to JCox902by Bilbo_cheshire,Then my last suggestion is to Reset it, while connected to the BMW Audio.
- Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the next step
- Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
- Then release the buttons
- Select your preferred language.

Jul 31, 2012 11:42 AM in response to Bilbo_cheshireby JCox902,I tried that and got the same result. I now believe there is some problem with this IPOD. I have a Touch with a non-fucntioning screen that I can get to connect in my car as well as the other IPOD classic. Only this one doesn't work. I got it from a used book store and I'm going to see if they'll trade it for another one. Thanks for your help.

Aug 9, 2012 9:10 AM in response to JCox902by JCox902,OK, I talked to the BMW service people and was told I needed one of their 'Y' cables that has both a USB connection and external interface plug. I was skeptical so I drove to the dealership and they hooked one up and it worked great. Their price for the cable was $72 so I passed. I went home and ordered the same cable online for $23 and my problem is solved. I have no idea why I need this cable for one ipod and not the other.

Can you share cable identification number with the community, as some tried OEM Y cables and still doesn't work, I assume you must connect the USB and 3.5 mm jack too.

Aug 29, 2012 3:22 PM in response to JCox902by Torsk_CNR,Hi, I have exactly the same problem in my old 2005 645 and my brand new 2013 640 Gran Coupe and with two different iPod Classics; I have no issue with my iPhone. It's obviously the BMW firmware that is at fault.
