MacBook Pro keeps freezing up since installing OS X Mountain Lion

Hi,

Around 3/4 days ago, I installed OS X Mountain Lion off the Mac App Store. The download and installation seemed to be succesful, with all features etc. working perfectly. But however, since installing OS X Mountain Lion, my MacBook Pro keeps freezing up, causing me to press the power button on the top right corner of the keypad to turn it off, which can't be good for the MacBook. It would be extremly helpful if anyone could reccomend me on what I should do to overcome this problem. I have deleted a lot of my files recently to free up space as I thought it was a memory problem, but I have 265GB left from my original 319GB. My MacBook Pro is the 13 inch model and is the 2011 model.

Thanks and your help will be appreciated,

The issues that I have been reading about seem to be isolated to the Macbook Pro 2010/2011 I've seen no one with the new models having this issue. Not scientific at all mind you. My 2008 Mac Pro at home does not as of yet have this problem and I have used it more than I have my 2010 Macbook Pro.

I went so far as to completely re-install Mountain Lion on a fresh drive to get rid of any legacy upgrade software on the machine. I reinstalled applications individually and did not use a Time Machine restore.

About 10 or so minutes after getting things up and running it happened again. This has to be a serious bug in 10.8 and I really do not want to have to go back to 10.7 if I can help it.

I just want to add I am having the same exact problem. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, 13 inch. I have had the computer since December and never had an issue with it freezing, ever. Now it has frozen twice in the past two days. Planning on calling Apple if I don't see some sort of fix soon. Of course, if it is a bug, they can't fix it unless they know it exists. Is there a way to report bugs?

My MacBook Pro is mid 2009.

It froze for the second time today since installing Mountain Lion and I'm not happy about it.

The first time it happened (last week) I had to reboot twice.

Today I had to reboot at least six times.

I was just about to phone Apple for advise and sod's law it started to work again.

This time every time it rebooted the Finder window was stuck on the desktop.

I don't like using the power button to restart. Even tried alt/cmd/esc for force quitting - even though the screen appeared I couldn't use the arrow keys.

The discussion thread above is a dead link.

Every time I crash and get the garbled graphics, I see entries like these in the console:

kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error

I found another discussion that indicated it could be an overheating problem. I installed a temperature monitor and watched. The computer was running a little hot, about 60-70 C. But I opened up a lot of tabs at the same time in Safari and saw the temperature spike at 78 C before the monitor garbled and the computer froze.

The interesting thing is that the fan never really powered up in response to the increase in temperature. As soon as I reboot, during the system startup the fan begins flowing very hot air, and then when I've logged back in the fans spin down to a lower level again.

Makes me wonder if there was a change to Mountain Lion power management that is causing this...

I'm having the same problem on my late 2008 MBP 15". Never had a problem before installing Mountain Lion. Now I have to reboot about 4-5 times a week.

My computer doesn't lock up completely. But Wi-Fi stops (you see only one black line on the WiFi icon), the clock stops (I was wondering why it seemed so early earlier tonight - the clock had been stopped for two hours) and many, but not all applications are "not responding". However, if I try to quit the applications that appear to be okay, then they also become "not responding". I have to force shut each application and then I can reboot using the Apple>Restart... command.

One of the things I've noticed is that many times it's iTunes that has the "not responding" message when the other apps don't, even if I haven't used it. I'm going to Quit iTunes and see if it still happens.

I don't think it's heat related. My computer feels no hotter than it ever did.

If 10.8.1 fixes this, I'm okay with it (although it was still sloppy for Apple to release with such a bug.) But the question is whether Apple even knows about it, since they provide no mechanism for non-developers to report bugs.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with exactly the same overheating and freezing-up problem. It's been running hot ever since I installed Mountain Lion shortly after the release. Just yesterday it started behaving erratically and then freezing up. Only holding the power button down will shut it off and allow a restart. I also have a 2009 iMac, which has not been freezing up. I rarely ever monitor the heat from it though, so don't know whether that is any different or not. Apple really needs to get on this and fix it immediately.
