Mountain Lion freezing

I can cause my MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch Early 2013 SSD running OS X 10.8.3 to lock up 100% of the time with the NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout! The problem happens using Oracle's java 7 update 21 (build 1.7.0_21-b12) whenever I launch the Java Control Panel and click on the "Settings..." button for Temporary Internet Files on the General tab. Everything locks up except for the track pad cursor / bluetooth mouse. From the Console Log the hang occurs at roughly 9:23. I let 5 minutes elapse before reseting via the power button at approximately 9:28. On this system the hang occurs 100% of the time without any intenstive graphic operations occuring. Anything I can do to resolve this?

I found at least a temporary workaround to my oracle 7 update 21 java control panel in temporary files settings system hang. The solution was to turn off the dynamic switching feature in OSX which switches to the nvidia GPU on heavy workloads. Apparently when oracle java starts, the system dynamically switches to use the nvidia GPU. The workaround is to keep this dynamic switch from occuring and leave the system using the built-in Intel HD Graphics 4000. http://gfx.io has a nifty tool called gfxCardStatus which can turn off dynamic switching and configure the system to use only the Intel HD Graphics 4000. It seems use of the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M along with java hits the NVDA Channel timeout frequently at least on my system 100% of the time when in the java control panel / temporary files settings dialog.

It seems VMWare Fusion also produces the same system hang with an "NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout" when the graphics mode is in dynamic switching mode and the system has switched dynamically to the nvidia GPU. Is Apple aware of the NVDA: Channel timeout problem causing system hangs on MacBook pros and might they be working on a solution?

Hello users, I am having the same problem with NVDA Channel Timeout when using Final Cut X or firefox. The funny thing is that Apple does not fix this problem. This is very annoying. :/

You pay for an expensive machine to have system errors or graphics drivers. If Steve Jobs were alive, I think he would have solved the problem. :/

Hmmmm. I have five Macs and do not have this problem on any. If Steve Jobs were alive I believe he may advise you to troubleshoot you Mac problems a little more thoroughly.

That you have machines on which it isn't happening is not exactly a persuasive argument. Obviously, the problem is somewhat sporadic.

Apple seems to think it's real, because they responded to my bug report with a "we think we might have fixed this in 10.8.N, please let us know", but as it happens, I can still reproduce it.

I own and/or manage a large number of Macs, all run ML, some from new and many from an upgrade. They don't suffer from it either.

Clearly it is not a widespread problem, which only makes it harder to troubleshoot, patience may be required to allow time for an identification of the cause, then a fix can be attempted.

I can easily go a month without triggering it. Does that mean that for 29 days, I have a Mac which doesn't suffer from this, and then suddenly my Mac does? I don't think so.

Mostly, though, I think that snide remarks like the one a few posts back about how obviously it's not a problem are (1) unhelpful (2) actually substantially anti-helpful.

If you can help troubleshoot, great! If you can't, please don't pop in just to insult people and insist that there's no problem.

Keeping this on topic, I can reproduce the problem 100% of the time on my MacBook Pro Early 2013 model with retina display, 16 Gbyte memory, 500 GBtye solid state drive, running OSX 10.8.3, dual GPU based system (intel HD 4000 along with NVIDIA). It came installed with 10.8.3 hence I do not have data for 10.8.2 and earlier. It is entirely repeatable each and every time with exactly the same console log messages so long as dynamic GPU switching is enabled. Install Oracle Java 7 update 21 and bring up the Oracle's java control panel and select Settings for Temporary Internet Files. The GUI locks up immediately. The same is true when using VMWare fusion each and every time I bring up a windows virtual machine. Same exact messages in the console log.

If I disable the NVIDIA GPU by tunring off gpu dynamic switching and leave on only the Intel HD 4000 the problem does not occur for either of the two applications. The side affect is the system can't use an external monitor via thunderbolt as this requires enabling the NVIDIA GPU and leads to the GUI hang.

If you don't have a macbook pro, retina, with dual GPUs I doubt you'll experience the problem the same as I do. I have 11 other macs and one xserve. None of the others exerpience the same problem. None the others have a retina display and none of the others as far as I have looked have dual GPUs. It is also possible that the problem is just related to the NVIDIA gpu / driver and is unrelated to dynamic gpu switching. Can't say for sure as I've not done enough testing to elminiate dynamic gpu switching as the culprit for the gui hang.

I've submitted my own bug report to Apple. These are my symptoms. Your mileage may vary.

Running in safe mode appears to restrict the ability to run java applications such as the Java Control Panel. The system reports a program abort just after after launching the Java Control Panel. Without Java Control Panel starting correctly I can't attempt to reproduce the problem.

Deinstalling Java means I can't run the System Preferences / Java Control Panel which always hangs the gui after selecting Settings for Temporary Internet Files. Note running a Win 7 x64 bit image via vmware fusion stored on a thunderbolt drive with the display setting for Accelerate 3D graphiccs set to "On" continues to hit the gui hang during vm boot. Its not a java only problem but something broader than this.

A new admin account still experiences the same hang when running Java Control Panel.

In all tests if I disable Dynamic Switching via gfxCardStatus and only use integrated Intel HD 4000 GPU, the problem does not occur.

The console log after each hang continues to indicate: "NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!".
The problem seems very straightforward to replicate on my system with my Macbook pro config specified in earlier post and very clearly seems to be an issue with use of the NVDA GPU. There is no randomness in the problem such that it only happens after x number of days.
