Messages/iMessage App Glitch on Macbook Pro (Early 2011)

For some reason, I can no longer send iMessages to anyone via the Messages app on my Macbook Pro. An alert continues to pop up that simply states the message can't be sent, and there is an option to try again/cancel. Originally I thought it may be the recipient of the Messages not having iMessage currently enabled, but none of my conversations have been updated in the app, and I can't send any iMessages to a phone number with iMessage enabled. The only iMessage I can send successfully is to another email address. I am running Mountain Lion. Anyone else having this problem/have a solution?

Thanks so much!

You already said the answer to your own question 😉

As it sits now, you need to send iMessages to other apple id emails.

Setting up the iphone for syncing with OSX:

go to your iphone, go to settings>messages>Receive at and log in with your apple id you have set for messages on OSX.

Your friends will have had to do the same thing on their phone.

Once they do that, have them give you the apple id they use for messages and add that email address to their contact card under their phone number (by default I think it is Home: Email).

once all that is setup you will be able to sync and use iMessages on Messages on OSX.

I hope this clarifies things for you

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

When I had Lion installed, I also had the beta version of Messages. My phone number and Apple ID have been linked since last fall. Up until today, I had absolutely no problems. All my messages would sync to my computer and my phone, and I have successfully sent iMessages from the Messages app to phone numbers before.

Yes, I believe you can send out messages to a phone number but it will only be sent to their phone (and not show up on OSX for them), the communication will need to be through email to email as it sits now to sync to all devices.

not until iOS 6 comes out, will you have the ability to truly use and tie your Phone number to iMessages. Right now, you can only communicate back and forth with a phone number on an iphone, even though those devices are sending the messages through iMessages.

I too was using the messages beta, and phone number to phone number communication is not fully supported on OSX Messages as it sits now. We have to wait for iOS 6 to come out.

I'm not entirely sure what the problem here is but it rings similar to the one I encountered:

Until last night, Messages on OS X worked beautifully. As of this morning, it all but stopped working. Can't send or receive messages on either of my Macs or my iPad, and I can only send messages from my iPhone to another iPhone number.

Right now my theory is there's a glitch in Apple's servers, maybe there's too many of us messaging, I don't know. At any rate I don't think we should expect any announcements just a quiet return to full function.

We'll see.
