Q: Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

    Aramn V-

those are interesting theories and interesting experiments.

Please post a kernel panic log.

This is the latest log from March 11.

BTW, my first KP was on Februrary 25/26, the day when the flash player v11.6.602.171 was released, cf. http://helpx.adobe.com/en/flash-player/release-note/fp_116_air_36_release_notes. html

That is even more interesting. Your panic occurred in routines called by ocspd: Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP)

It relates to encrytption, secure socket layer, and httpS: processing. Some online reports suggest frequent panics may be caused by corruption in the certificate revocation database.

Are all your reports like this one?

At first I thought some 3rd party kext are at fault (soundflower, airparrot), but except parallels I've removed all of them without any improvement.

I'm not 100% positive, but as far as I remember Safari was running in every case in the back-/foreground...

Did you install your own RAM? Have you run something such as Rember for an extended period lately?

You may be having a hardware issue with your RAM.

I think clinton is onto something.

You have a distinct NON-trend, which is a trend in itself. When the failures are all over the place in a Machine with Virtual Memory, it points to RAM memory failures as the likely cause.

Finding the exact module and  catching it can take many nights of all night memory testing.

One other approach (if you bought guaranteed memory) is to contact the Vendor, tell them it has failed and ask them to send you replacements. When they get them back, they will run them on a dedicated memory tester machine and find the bad parts in five minutes.

I upgraded the Ram on this book about one, one a half years ago and never had any issues up till now.

Just in case I've run 2-3 cycles of memtest all -L without any errors. So I'm pretty sure it's not the memory.

But I'll retest again just to be on the safe side...

Just had another KP... had a small flash running on Safari, twitch on Chrome and was about to update to the the latest flash version released today... just when I switched to Chrome to close it, KP happened...

In the background memtest run on it's first cycle and everything was clean up to the KP:

Mac OS X 10.8.2 (12C60) running in multiuser mode

    Memory Page Size: 4096

System has 2 Intel core(s) with SSE

    Requested memory: 2601MB (2728235008 bytes)

    Available memory: 2601MB (2728235008 bytes)

Allocated memory: 2601MB (2728235008 bytes) at local address 0x0000000101000000

    Attempting memory lock... locked successfully

Partitioning memory into 2 comparison buffers...

Buffer A: 1300MB (1364117504 bytes) starts at local address 0x0000000101000000

Buffer B: 1300MB (1364117504 bytes) starts at local address 0x00000001524ec800

Running 2 test sequences... (CTRL-C to quit)

    Test sequence 1 of 2:

Running tests on full 2601MB region...

      Stuck Address       : ok

      Linear PRN          : ok

Running comparison tests using 1300MB buffers...

    Minor update:

    • Run memtest in single user mode for 2 cycles... everything ok.
    • The latest security update of flash hasn't improved my situation.

I also thought about the fact that it's not always the same BSD thread that was run last. In fact this makes alot of sense:

    • Shouldn't there be 2 actual BSD threads as my MBP has 2 cores?
    • Kernel traps might occur on context switching. Then the last thread does not necessarily have to be the one who caused the KP.
    • I do see a trend in my crashes: 2x WebProcess+1xPluginProcess indicate that it had to do with Safari. If you look at the PluginProcess it backtraced to some graphiccard drivers. So we have 4xkernel_task which crashed, one even saying that it's the same graphiccard driver. Thus I assume the flash plugin causes some trouble with this kernel extension under Safari.

Does anyone by chance have a flash player v11.5 lying around? I have troubles finding it :/

    no

    practically impossible

Safari of late versions are sadly unstable... I have multi-crashes on lot of computers. Not KPs, but Safari crashes, partially on webprocess. Can probably tell you that Safari in next update will be far more stable. No crashes at all since sobe build.

Does anyone by chance have a flash player v11.5 lying around?

Not sure it will help as (AFAIK) Flash Player disables itself until you update it to latest.

Also I can see parallels and steam on your mac. Is Parallels latest? Do you use official steam or something like this ? It is important as virtualisation software kexts works deep and two different virtualisation systems (parallels and some steam wrapper) may conflict in strange ways.

Latest Parallels 7, but never run it... just the kext that got loaded.

I can uninstall that too, but I don't think it's the reason why things crash...

Steam was running just once and it crashed when I switched from another process to steam in order to close it.

uninstall unused VM's and any not needed 3-rd party kexts.

see here for example about parallels possible problems

it'd be better if it IS Parallels - as there are a lot of VM's
