I am trying to update my flash player but it's not working. I saw that I may need to temporarily disable my antivirus software to update the adobe flash player but I have googled it and found nothing and the teenagers aren't home to do it for me. Help!

What anti-virus software did you install? I would recommend uninstalling it altogether - they are of no help to your Mac.

Hmmm. Good question. I just asked my husband and he said we never did install antivirus software because Macs don't need it. I wonder why my flash player wont' update.
What happens when you go to www.adobe.com and try to download it?
It says it was installed, but then when I try to watch a video on facebook, I get a popup that says my flash player needs to be updated.
Did if have you close Safari while it was installing?
Did you restart safari.
Go to Help > Installed Plug-ins and see if the Flash plugin is present.
I did close safari while it was installing and then I restarted safari. I checked the installed plug-ins like you said and I don't see anything that says adobe flash but I do see this:

I don't believe it loaded the plug in correctly, I have 11.3 r300.
I have uninstalled shockwave flash and reinstalled it. I restarted my computer both times. It still says I have 10.3 r181

Don't use that one, use the previous one that I gave you, it should show version 11.3. Before you do it this time Restart your computer first.
I restarted my computer. Then I used the link you posted. It said I successfully installed version 11.3. But this is still what it says when I check for installed plug-ins:

This is a little more involved:
Go to your Finder menu.
Hold down the option key, click on Go at the top then select Library.
In the Library window that opens, click on the Internet Plug-ins folder to open it.
Look for a file that says Flash Player.plugin
Control Click on the file, select Get Info and see what version it is. If it is 11.3 leave it alone and see if there are other Flash Player.plugin files. If there are delete them and then try restarting again.
