checkerboard displayed when playing back video

Checkerboard displayed when playing back videos on 2010 mac mini running Mountain Lion, Itunes 10 and 8 GB of memory.

Audio plays, but video displays as gray and white checkerboard, when entering full screen the video can be seen for a brief moment then reverts back to checkerboard.

Videos are all purchased through itunes.

I also have this problem and it has broken my home theater setup. I have a Mac Mini connected to my TV and I use my MacBook as my "remote control". Now I have to disconnect my MacBook to play content that I have legitimately purchased through iTunes. Hopefully Apple will fix this soon, but I doubt they will. I'm thinking of getting a small form factor PC and running Linux on it to get around this problem.

To the posters above:, I've opened bug id# 12222529 with Apple through the developer website.

The work around is to turn off screen sharing on your remote computer. In my case I am using an iMac to control a keyboard less and mouse less Mini hooked to my HDTV. Fortunately I had a wireless keyboard and USB mouse laying around so I am able to use the Mini but I have to use the HDTv as my screen.

Another work around is to simply launch the movie with your remote control computer and then turn off screen sharing imediately. In theory (I have not tried this), the checkerboard should go away and hopefully you've only missed a minute or two of your movie.

I think everyone agrees this is unacceptable as screen sharing worked so well on Lion and now does not.

Note: I also linked this forum discussion to the bug report.

Yep - I ran into this one too - screensharing my HDMI-connected Mac Mini onto my MacBook Air caused the checkerboard effect on DVD Player and iTunes videos.

The thing that saved me was Mobile Mouse Pro - it uses a proprietary wifi-based protocol to control mouse and keyboard input from your iPad, iPod or iPhone. Jolly useful!

And another. I had a choice in HTPCs, and I chose the Mini. As I also have an all Mac household, and as the Apple Store rep said there'd be "no problems," I bought the Mini and a Pegasus Tbolt array, loaded all of my media up and proceeded to FAIL. Come on Apple! I really don't want to use VLC for this (I use it for other things, but dammit, all my stuff is loaded into iTunes, and iTunes is Apple's product, so why under ANY circumstances would it break on Apple hardware with content PAID FOR and licensed via Apple?). I don't want to have to mess around with external controllers, nor should I have to. Did Apple fire all of the QC personnel? Come on, Apple. You are so much better than this.
