mountain lion removed display icon from menu bar

How do I get my display icon back into my menu bar. It was super convienent to have it there to detect displays and mirror with just a click or two when I have my extra monitor connected.

Thanks.

I agree this is a problem. I have a new MBP and have been using a VGA adapter with it since purchase, and the Mountain Lion upgrade seems to strip the menu bar display preferences. My old monitor is wonky and I have to switch the resolution back and forth to keep it from being fuzzy, so I really miss having the display preferences icon in the menu bar. I'm going to leave feedback on this one.

In general terms, Mountain Lion has been the buggiest/feature-droppingest? OS release I've had to deal with in a long time. I'm suprised and disappointed in Apple, unfortunately.

Reporting the same problem: no menu bar icon for display mirroring on 13-inch, Mid 2010 MBP running 10.8.

External display is via DisplayPort.

Really makes using this MBP to present to clients a pain.

For the life of me can't understand WHY Apple would remove such a harmless + useful feature of their OS.

On Windows 7 or even Windows 8RC you can hotkey to toggle displays... it's essential.

I had to downgrade to Lion. You can add the Displays icon back to the menu bar, however, for those of us with an "old" Mac, you'll never be able to adjust brightness or change resolutions from the Displays menu bar icon--your only option will be to "Open Display Preferences" ...

As a side note, for me, this forces me to apply the "Microsoft Rule" to Apple; I won't even consider new Apple products until it's first service pack or second generation, since they won't be clear on the removal of features, key components or otherwise just tell me to spend another $3,500 on a MBP so I get the functionality that previously worked flawlessly.

I find that instead of rebooting that Dinaching reported, that I have to plug in the display adapter several times before the MacbookPro recognizes it. It took me 8 minutes to get the projector running, which is pretty bad in front of customers. This needs to be fixed by Apple! A stupid change by a code writer who must never have tried it out in real life situations.

My situation is similar to geoErin. 2010 MBP 15". I need to adjust my display preferences fairly frequently because I use my external monitor in different rooms and its position relative to the MBP needs to be adjusted in Displays->Arrangement when I switch. Menu bar Displays item was great, it was also a good quick check that the computer correctly identified the monitor when I plugged it in.

AOC external 1680x1050 connected mdp/tbolt adapter to DVI. Display always connects - ALWAYS - but once or twice the computer misidentified it as a generic display. I guess that was before the Mt Lion upgrade.

Mt Lion display in menu bar NEVER, EVER shows up.

I also move from various offices and conference rooms where I am always plugging into an external display of some sort. I am quite dissapointed that the menu bar icon does not appear, even when clicked in system preferences. I am glad I am not the only one having this issue. Hopefully it will be fixed in the update this fall...**fingers crossed**
