Q: No Wake-on-LAN possible since updating to ML

I think using a third party main router causes many problems mentioned here. I myself have an Airport Extreme in bridge mode and a third party router as main modem/router. I tried numerous solutions but nothing keeps working for more than a few hours/days.

I think for me the only way to solve this permanently is to setup my Airport Extreme as my main router. I don't know if that is possible though, because I would have to set the third party modem/router in bridge mode.

I was wondering if you have any issue with wifi sync. Once my iMac goes to sleep my iphone will not wifi sync. I am not sure if there is a different wake on lan packet that is used for wifi sync but I have had this issue forever.

I've mostly lost touch with this thread and since I've upgraded to Mavericks quite a while ago, I don't know if it's even relevant. That said, I gave up on "Wake On Lan" before I upgraded and set my Mac Mini to "Never Sleep". I'm not sure if the problem was resolved in ML or Mavericks, but given my Mini is fairly low power and I have a home control system running on it, as well as my remote access (SplashTop), my best bet was not to allow my poor, sleep deprived Mac ever to sleep and to stay awake forever.

My original reason for WOL was when I remotely accessed my Mac and now my problem is resolved in a totally brute force way.

Ditto here.  I notice, though, that there is a new Mavericks update that shows up for me today (OS X Update 10.9.4) and one of the items is "Improves the reliability of wake from sleep".  Has anyone who has had difficulty in this thread tried this update, and found it to resolve the issue?

I installed 10.9.4 a few days ago.  Have just done a few tests and got mixed results.

I'm using the WakeOnLan utility to try to wake a Mac Mini connected by WiFi to my modem-router.  Once I also tried the WakeMe utility.  Here's a list of results:

I'm having difficulty finding a pattern.  It seems that the longer the Mini is in Sleep the less likely it is to wake.

I have left DarkWake and PrioritizeNetworkReachabilityOverSleep at the default values.

Basically I'd say the 10.9.4 did nothing noticeable to the ongoing wake on LAN issue.  Sure, it woke on some occasions but I can't predict when it will work and when it will not.  Perhaps the Mini is going through stages of Sleep that I don't know about.

I wish Apple would advise that it works/doesn't work rather than being so enigmatically silent.  The only advice I can find has this sentence:

     "Wake on Demand works by partnering with a Bonjour Sleep Proxy running on your AirPort Base Station, Time Capsule or Apple TV ...."

I think that Apple should not assume all Apple owners have one of those three devices.  What about the hundreds of non-apple devices that people use ?

It's been a problem for years - no wonder business are not keen on using Apple gear in serious situations.  It's not the cost that puts them off but, the lack of follow-through on clearly established issues.

I Have it all still no work. Mac Mini, Apple TV, Ipad, IPhone, and I have completely replaced everything in my 2010 Mac Mini and removed server and replaced with regular OS. All I wanted to do was replace my Linux media server which was a power hog ( but always worked, 5 years more then 1800 days logging over 43,000 hours, and never restarted or needing rebooted ) with something more efficient. Now I am being told I have to purchase a Apple airport router for my mac mini to wake up on LAN access??? I don't think so APPLE... You get this fixed or I will start losing my Apple products 1 by 1.There are many media server options available today, I chose the Mac Mini solely because its 21 watts of power consumption while serving media and less the 3 watts when sleeping, but what good is saving power if the device does not do its job when required? I am now completely at my ends witt with this issue.

SO, clearly for me the second hard drive which was storing my entire itunes library in the mini was disconnecting for no reason.

I have removed the hard drive from the mini and I am coping the 305 gigs of media from the drive to my external FireWire drive with the Mac mini Via a USB to sata cable.Removing the drive has caused the mini's cooling fan to run at top speed because the thermocouples from the drive are disconnected.This test will tell me if the drive is failing or not because if the mini will copy the entire library without failing, it's pretty good chance the hard drive is fine.

The next test will be to allow the hard drive to live outside the mini enclosure and continue to be the iTunes storage drive.I will have to remove the thermocouples and connect them to the logic board which will allow the cooling fan to operate correctly instead of being at full speed all the time.

If the Mini becomes unresponsive then I will disconnect the thermocouples and let the fan run full speed and run the test again.

My suspicion is the Mac Mini cannot be used as a media server if it is equipped with two internal hard drives using 1 as the media storage drive, I believe we have a thermo issue causing speratic behavior which includes rebooting, access to service denials,going into deep sleeps being unresponsive to wake on LAN, and a few others which I'm sure are heat related conditions causing RAM to fail!

For me WOL stop working in ML when itunes started,

Console shows errors with mDNSResponder which is responsible of Bonjour Sleep Proxy connections to Airport or Apple TV.

Console shows huge list of recorded errors after iTunes 12 starts:

ERROR: handle_resolve_request bad interfaceIndex 1 till 24

itunes failed to create replacement string

When i just quit from iTunes , WOL work as it should to work.

Diskutil doesn't help!

Anybody faced with this kind of problem?

It covers:

1. Identify which network port is compatible with Wake on Demand on you machine

2. Prioritize your local Wi-Fi network to make Wake on Demand possible

Since I'm using Ethernet, I also made it my preferred network port in the "gear menu", under "Network" in the System Preferences.
