Mountain Lion 802.3ad Network Link Aggregation - Mac Pro 2010

A little off the topic of this thread discussion, but some thoughts from me………

Although an iPhone user, iOS 6 integration within OS X is really not of importance to me.

Maybe it is what many other OS X users want/need, however to my mind the Professional/Business OS X/MAC users out their use MAC to earn a living (yes you heard right, not just playing on them), the fundamentals of a rock solid, dependable operating systems, that 'just works', is far more important.

Professional/Business users use MAC and in particular 'MAC Pro' because of their capabilities and credentials, they aren't seen as play things but more over work tools.

With the demise of X-Serve, the first shot over the bow of Professional/Business user community was made, maybe now without Jobs the suites at Apple want to milk the iPhone/iPod/iPad cash cow so much more, but I appeal for them to keep in mind their roots, without roots the tree can not stand up.

I'm surprised that after all the issues with OS X Lion and in particular OS X Lion Server, Apple put out the next OS X release as they have, fundamentals broken.

I've taken a lot of jibes from other business owners whom run Windoze, for my decision to go MAC, up until now i've always thought and felt vindicated for my position and actions spending the money on acquiring MAC's over vanilla Windoze PC/Servers, but now I do indeed wonder.

I started this discussion thread back in July, on the 31st July I called Apple direct and logged a support request/ticket (see earlier post in this discussion).

Apple said they were fully aware of this issue, and that they would work quickly to resolve, and that such fundemental operating issues would likely be fixed within the first mountain lion service pack. In reality this did not occur in service pack 10.8.1 and from early review of 10.8.2 (developer) likely not to be solved in the next service pack, Apple have not closed nor further responded to my support ticket etc etc.

As mentioned in previous posts in this discussion, for the majority of mountain lion users, they will likely never ever need 802.3ad because they use WIFI or happy with or only have a single ethernet connection, it's really only business/commercial/pro users that need, will use 802.3ad to move lots of data.

On my side, I would really like time to go sit on the phone again for another hour, and repeat every week to keep the pressure up to get this fixed, but alas I need to work, run my business, to have my Mac Pro's work to earn money, so I went back to Lion.

When this issue ultimately get's fixed maybe then i'll go back to mountain lion, until then i'll just keep busy using Lion, it works!

I just went back to see if Apple had posted any solutions or updates against my (3) support tickets for this issue, and all have been CLOSED!!!!

The crusade continues.

I've contacted Apple support again today, firstly to understand why my previous support ticket has a closed status, and secondly to find out where the fix is for 802.3ad network aggregation.

This is what I learnt during my 20 minute call.

Apparently all user raised support tickets are closed after one month, however dependant on the natuture/topic of the initial ticket and discussion with Apple an internal 'Engineering' ticket is raised for engineering to discharge, i.e. work up a solution/software fix. Apple don't publish the 'Engineering' ticket.

In my case an Engineering ticket was raised and has been on engineering's work list for some 7 weeks now and is still open, that is to say no solution or fix has been formalised for 802.3ad for mountain lion.

So as to the big question, 'when will the 802.3ad solution be coming'?

After speaking with AppleCare Enterprise team, I've been informed 802.3ad solution is as of today, not on the list for service pack 10.8.2! (N.B. This is subject to revision prior to public release, but it was thought unlikely).

Also no formal release date for 10.8.2, just in case anyone was wondering.

If the solution will be part of service pack 10.8.3 is currently unknown, all that could be confirmed is engineering are aware, have ticket to close, have known of issue for at least 7 weeks maybe slightly earlier as other commercial users may have also reported issue to Apple.

One good point that came out of the call with AppleCare Enterprise team was, I have now direct contact details for them, we have exchanged contact details and agreed to keep in touch. Maybe a more personable side of Apple.

So in summary, no solution (apart from Sleep work-around I posted orignally), no timetable to get solution, but apparently they're working it.

Channel bonding supports the IEEE 802.3ad/802.1ax Link Aggregation Control Protocol for using multiple low-speed physical interfaces as a single high-speed logical interface.

Obviously difficult things like restarting the test machine to see if the link comes back up, weren't on the test plan.

I went off to see what is in service pack 10.8.2, can't see any mention of 802.3ad fix, so what I was told earlier today by AppleCare Enterprise appears to be correct. 10.8.2 Looks mostly to deal with iOS integration.
