Will doing an iOS to my iPhone correct a blank screen?

My iPhone screen is going blank, sometimes it will be normal but more times than not it is black! Has anyone out there ever experienced this and if so what have you done to rectify the problem.

p.s. I have done a hard re-boot, but it has not been successful
