Dear All,

I am editing a 2-camera chroma key show which has not changed in format or incoming files types since November 2010.

Computer:

Mac Pro

15GB, 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

ATI Radeon HD 4870

RAID 0

FCP 7.0.3

OS X 10.6.8

FxFactory

Boris Keyer BCC6

Footage from P2 cameras converted in FCP

Footage from the internet captured using iShowU, then converted to QT file using DV codec

RAID 0 Capacity 1TB

Available 840,86GB

… this system has not been upgraded (physically) since I bought it in November 2010. Naturally, FxFactory has issued the odd electronic upgrade since.

Sequence Settings;

Frame size 720x576 CCIR 601 / DV PAL 5:4

Aspect Ratio : PAL CCIR 601 (720x576)

F Dom : Lower

Edit Timebase 25

Compressor DVCPro50 - PAL

Quality 100%

Audio 48k

Depth 16-bit

Config Channel Grouped

The show is broadcast in 4:3 Mono.

This morning, once attempting to use the keyed, a message appeared to say that "your trail period has ended". Strange, I bought the thing and I have the receipt here. I uninstalled the BCC6 keyer and then downloaded the same from the original link I was given by Boris. I installed it using the code I was sent originally and relaunched FCP.

A warning from FxFactory appeared telling me that "FxFactory found software on your system that may cause rendering artifacts and destabilize Final Cut when plug-ins are used". I then downloaded a new version of the GLTOOLS.plugin file and installed it (deleting the previous version before a computer reboot).

Although the FxFactory warning has now gone upon launch of FCP, the BCC6 keyed now takes twice the time to render and at times throws up either "General Error. Insufficient Memory" or "Codec not found".

Last week my machine was capable of rendering a 13.5 minute, 2-camera sequence in 12 minutes - today it's over 30.

I have include the first part of a very long crash report below. If you have any ideas what might be up, please let me know.

Thanks for your valuable time.

Stu

Digital Rebellion has a crash log analyzer.  Might be useful.  I'd talk to the suppliers of 3rd party plugins about compatibility with your current system.  I don't have either of these plugins so I have no experience with this particular situation.

You might try deleting your fcp preferences

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491

and running standard system utilities like repairing permissions, diskwarrior, etc.

I'd also remove any other 3rd party plugins you've got installed to see if this could be caused by some sort of conflict.

And here are some common fcp troubleshooting tips that might be useful

I have already contacted the 3rd party suppliers and they are not aware of any compatability problems. I used the Prefs Manager and it succeeded in causing a Motion 5 problem - FCP would not open unless I moved Motion 5 out of the Apps folder. It is now on the desktop and FCP opens. I think that removal of all 3rd party software and a complete reinstall of FCP is necessary? No?

  • Michael Grenadier Level 7 Level 7 (20,320 points)

I don't see how preference manager just applied to fcp7 prefs could cause a motion 5 problem.  But if you have motion 5 installed, that might be the problem.  Do you also have fcpX installed?  If I remember correctly, there may be some issues having both fcpX and fcp7 installed.  You might do some searching on that.

I'd start by removing 3rd party plugins and see what happens before you do a complete reinstall of fcp.  If you decide to do the complete reinstall, do some searching on the proper way to uninstall fcp7.  May not be as simple as you think.  I think there's an app that will do the uninstall for you.

    yup there is.  http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/

    FCS remover.

  • Stu042 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Well trust me, I used Prefs Man and then FCP wouldn't launch until I'd moved Motion 5. No, I do not have FCPX. The strange thing in, everything has been working perfectly for nearly 2 years ... and then this morning, bam!

The thing is, I need those 3rd party plugins to complete the show so if they are no longer in the system, then how do I know that it's working properly.

I will take a look at reinstalling from the link that you sent ...

  • Michael Grenadier Level 7 Level 7 (20,320 points)

I understand about needing the 3r4d party plug ins.

do you have ANY other 3rd party plugins installed?  If so try moving them out of the plug in folder.

How much time to do you have to troubleshoot this?

Wondering if there could be a problem with some of your media.

Try copying and pasting the contents of your timeline to a new sequence with the same settings.

Try removing both plugins, downloading the plugins again and reinstalling them.  Possible one or both got corrupted.

Try the troubleshooting tips I pointed you towards in an earlier post.  Creating a new user sometimes will shake things up.  Certainly worth a shot.

do you have ANY other 3rd party plugins installed?  If so try moving them out of the plug in folder. - YES

How much time to do you have to troubleshoot this?  - UNDER 12 HOURS

Wondering if there could be a problem with some of your media. - SHOULDN'T BE. BEEN USING THE SAME IMPORT PROCESS SINCE NOV 2010.

Try copying and pasting the contents of your timeline to a new sequence with the same settings. - TRIED IT. FCP SHUT DOWN WHEN I TRY TO DO THAT (ATTEMPTED 3 OR 4 TIMES BEFORE I REALISED THAT IT SIMPLY WASN'T GOING TO DO IT)

Try removing both plugins, downloading the plugins again and reinstalling them.  Possible one or both got corrupted. TRUE

Try the troubleshooting tips I pointed you towards in an earlier post.  Creating a new user sometimes will shake things up.  Certainly worth a shot. - INDEED IT IS

    Apologies for using caps ...!

  • Michael Grenadier Level 7 Level 7 (20,320 points)

caps are perfect in this situation.

So have you moved the other plugins yet?

If you can't copy from one sequence to another, there may be problems with some of the media.

But here's what I'd try.  Duplicate your sequence.  Remove the plugins filters from the shots in the duplicate sequence.  Now try copying the contents of this sequence to a new sequence.  Did fcp crash?  If so, there's probably a problem with the sequence that may have nothing to do with the plugins.  If it didn't, try copying the filters from shots in the original sequence to the same shots in the new sequence.

Another thing to try is to take your media offline and see if you can then copy the contents of the sequence to a new sequence.  If this works, it MAY indicate a problem with some of the media.  I understand that it used to work, but media can get corrupted.

You might try applying the plugins to different media and see if that works.  If so, again, that MAY point to a problem with the media.

  • Stu042 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Sorry not to have been back in touch, but such was the pressure to get the show done, I took a copy of the project off to a friend who has the same setup and got it finished and exported there.

As I write, I have not yet moved the plugins. However, the plugin folder is so full I am concerned that I may move plugins that belong to FCP.

FxFactory have sent me through a set of instructions for downloading and installing a new GLTools.plugin and Boris say that there a re no known issues between their products and those of FxFactory.

I am still confused as to how this could have happened as all was workig well last week when I switched the system off, yet the next time I powered up "your trial has expired" certainly took me by surprise.

So, both software suppliers have suggested a re-install of FCP Studio but I would likeot have a look at trying to pin-point the culprit. I have another earlier show on the RAID discs so I could start by looking at the media on that project file and see if the sequence can be rendered. If it can, then it's the media from the latest programme which is at fault. If it isn't then, I'll start moving plugins.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • Stu042 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Well I tried to open last week's show and first "This version of Final Cut Pro is incompatible with Motion 5 which is installed in a directory that previously contained Motion 4" was displayed. Strange, as Motion 5 worked perfectly well before ...

Last week's project will not open. The canvas and viewer grey squares pop up, then the programme shuts down.

  • Michael Grenadier Level 7 Level 7 (20,320 points)

Just because it used to work, doesn't mean that there is no compatability issue between fcp7 and motion 5.  fcp7 was designed to work with the earlier version of motion and this may be the cause of your problems.

You also say your plug in folder has a alot of files in it.  This may be part of the problem.  I'm pretty sure that digital rebellion has a plug in manager.  This might be something that will be very useful to get.  There have always been plugins for other programs that could cause problems with fcp not to mention plugins from earlier versions of fcp that can cause problems with later versions.

  • Russ H Level 6 Level 6 (17,065 points)

Like Michael has mentioned Motion 5 may be contributing to your problems. It (and FCPX) can coexist quite nicely with the FCS programs, but can also raise havoc with them (and vice versa)  if not installed correctly. (See these installation best practices.)

BTW, I've installed it my way and Apple's way, and I've learned from experience that their way is way better.

    Good luck.

    Russ
