Q: Can't sign in on iMessage and FaceTime after upgrading to ML

After doing a clean install of ML, I can't login anymore to iMessage and FaceTime. I'm correctly login to iTunes, AppStore and on my iPhone iMessage works good.

The error is "Il server ha rilevato un errore durante l'elaborazione della registrazione. Riprova pi tardi"

or in english

"The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later."

The problem is in ML because with Snow Leopard I hadn't a single problems. I'm on iMac 21.5'' late 2009.

Thanks

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion

Ok after 2 hours of playing with various things and reading Apple Support Communities, I have managed to fix this for my friend. The issue is really access to the iMessage and FaceTime servers but plain copying of original hosts maybe an issue if you have something valuable there. What I've done was /private/etc/hosts file review and commenting the lines I didn't like. For example, you may want to comment the lines, involving Thawte, Verisign etc. - those may be used as security providers while establishing channels with servers. I mean, there is no recipe, just open hosts and edit it, thinking of what do the lines contain - some lines prevent iMessage and FaceTime from building the service for you - there is no other way in case you are logged into iCloud and everything works fine on other devices.

Just don't forget to run a few commands after you have copied hosts file back to the /private/etc

    sudo chown root hosts

    sudo chgrp wheel hosts

    sudo chmod 666 hosts

Access permissions are absolutely critical in UNIX - maybe the reason for the next trouble

    I encountered the same issue.

after reading the whole thread, I thought it was due to dns issue.

I tried the combo of solutions above, it finally worked.

the steps I managed to fix it:

    1). remove com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist

2). reset /etc/hosts (you may have an original version of hosts file named hosts~orig)

(if you were in China, see additional steps )

3). kill the imagent process(which will restart immidiately).

4). restart your facetime and(or) imessage, try loging in.

    additional steps:

a). reset your dns (removing the well-known 74.117.62.158 from your network dns setting)

b). try connecting to a us vpn.

    HI,

The Home Folder/Library (or  ~/Library) is hidden in  both Lion and Mountain Lion

With the Finder as the "front" app use the Go Menu > Go to Folder.

In the Dialogue box that appears type ~/Library/Preferences   (The "~" replaces Hard drive/Users/(your account) )

Drag the item to the Trash and restart the Messages app.

Looks like the latest software upgrade addresses the issue. I was having the same problem (not being able to sign in to iMessage with my Apple ID or use FaceTime), but after the software upgrade everything is fine.

    HI,

It seems the latest "Supplemental" update is only for certain models of Mac and more people than have those models seem to be effected.

I too have been fighting an issue where I couldn't sign in to Messages and Back to My Mac wasn't connecting either. I don't use Facetime so I am not sure if that was working or not. The solution to my problem was that my computer's serial number was not programmed into the logic board. If you go to Apple>About This Mac and click on More Info... and it says something like My Computer Serial# next to Serial Number it means the computer's serial number isn't programmed into the logic board. I took my MBP to an Apple Store and they "Serialized the logic board". After that Messages and Back to My Mac started working.

If a MBP's logic board is replaced the technician is supposed to program the comptuer's serial number into it. If they don't you have this problem.

Same problem. I have a iMac with same setup and everything runs ok. I have messages, facetime and "backup to my Mac". Yesterday I did a clean install on my MBP 3.1 of 10.8.2 and I can't login in this services. I already tried everything, without sucess, so I think that I have the same problem. Last year, my MBP had the "nvidia" problem and I have to replace my logic boad. Today I notice that I don't have any serial associated...

    Hi,

It does seem that most people who see this problem in OS X 10.8.2 are seeing it because the Serial Number was not flashed back to the reinstalled Logic board.

The only "cure" is to have the Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider restore the Serial Number.

It appears it is held on an EPROM chip
