How do I get dictation to work correctly in Microsoft Word 2011?

I am trying to get dictation to work correctly in Microsoft Word. It is not responding to commands like "new paragraph" or "new line". All of the text ends up in the same paragraph. Dictation works fine in Pages and Gmail, but not in Word.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

I have tried multiple ways with the same result. It doesn't type the words "new paragraph" or "new line", but it never creates a new line or paragraph. Once I finish the dictation and click "Done", all the text appears in the same paragraph regardless of how many "new paragraph" commands I spoke.''

Strange... it works perfectly in Pages and Gmail, so I know it is not a pronunciation or syntax issue.

To add to the mystery, punctuation commands like "comma" "period" and "exclamation point" work perfectly in Word. Ugh...

I have the same experience. The new paragraph and new line commands do not appear to work in Microsoft word running under Mountain lion.

sigh. thats really lame. i installed ML for my mom almost explicitly for the benefit of saving her from having to type unnecessarily since she has arthritis. and her job requires her to use word.

you'd really think that when apple adds a text-entry feature that is supposed to work "anywhere you can type", they'd at least make sure it at least works in the the single most commonly used word processing tool.

A month has gone by since the last post with no apparent resolution in sight.

I have the same problem with "new paragraph" and "new line" not working with Dictation while in MS Word 2011. However it works fine with MS Outlook 2011 from the same Office Suite. And it works just fine creating this message as well.

Has anyone made any progress on this problem?

likewise you could dictate into text edit and copy and paste from there as well (and not have to buy a separate piece of software in the process). but the appeal of this feature was supposed to make text input easier, and adding a layer of indirection through an extra piece of software kinda defeats that. especially for less computer savvy people.

my mom for quite some time couldn't even fully comprehend the idea of multitasking and background windows. she would open and close applications as she needed them, one at a time.

Same here. I'm using office 2013. It is hard to believe, That there is still no solution for that problem. Parallels desktop and office 2013 lets you dictate, Though there is still no way to get the new line or new paragraph

command to get to work in word or outlook. Do you think this isn't a apple issue or a Microsoft issue? On Windows in the ordinary editor the commands work well.

I actually changed to mac for this killerfeature and i really need it. Now it does not work in the most common office app..

Hi folks,

I've sunk some time into this one today, and I think I've figured out the problem. I'm running Mac 10.9.2, MS Word 2011 (14.3.9). I'm trying to make a bulleted list, and I want to dictate it. However, "new line" only inserts a new line in MS Word and does not create a new bullet. The enter key makes a new line with a new bullet, but the dictation command "new line" doesn't make a new bullet (only a new line under the same bullet).

This is just a guess, but I think Microsoft Word uses the input from the keyboard directly, instead of using the characters the keyboard types. The end of line character that Mavericks Dictation inserts seems to be the same as what the Return key types (a Unix style LF (a.k.a. unicode 000a or /n)), but Microsoft Word doesn't behave the same when you insert 000a via Mac unicode input. I suspect that Word waits for the keyboard entry to generate the XML tags for the new list item. By the way, TextEdit lists don't work with Mavericks Dictation either. Pages '09 does have a robust response to both dictation and unicode 000A insertion, so you can dictate bulleted lists in Pages.

Summary: Word isn't programmed to use "new line" from Mavericks Dictation for editing bulleted lists or outlines. "new line" does create a new line in Word if you're just writing normal text.
