Since upgrading from 10.7 to 10.8, I have found that the Apple Remote Control fails to work with my Mac. It fails to control the volume or any other function associated with the Remote. However, I have EyeTV installed and I can use it with this to change the volume, pause, enter the EyeTV menu etc. so the remote works as does the IR on my Mac.
Any thoughts?

So, it looks like I tracked it down to the following process running;
/usr/libexec/UserEventAgent (ID 186)
When I quit this process, the issue is resolved. Any idea what this belongs to or how I might stop it form running?

Wow. I'm doing a really good job of solving this problem for myself. So, I've norrowed this issue down to the universal access in the System Preferences. It was already enabled so I disabled it, restarted turned it back on again. Issue resolved.
Universal access was listed in the number of plug-ins against the user event agent..
I spoke too soon.
Its back again. Issue is related to my account as when I switch to a Guest acount it works OK

So. I have repaired my ACL permissions and, fingures crossed, seems to woek now.
If you have Candleair installed, use it's preferences. sometimes it conflicts.

I am having a similar issue. I recently installed 10.8 (ML) and since installing ML I have purchased a unibody remote.
I know the remote is working because it works in plex, however it has no function with any apple software.
Any luck finding a solution to this issue?
Well, I believe I linked my issue to EyeTV installed on my Mac. I have since contacted Elgato who have fixed my issue for me by stopping EyeTV from using the Apple Remote. Alternatively, you can simply install Candelair which should fix your issue.
Do you have EyeTV installed? - if you want to disable the use of the Apple Remote by EyeTV then try the following;
Open your Terminal application, then type in this:
defaults write com.elgato.eyetv 'use apple remote' NO
Press Return, and this command will be active. It's probably best to restart OS X after this.
If you want to go back to the former way of doing things, then try this line:
defaults write com.elgato.eyetv 'use apple remote' YES
Turns out my issue was plex helper was running which did not allow other apps to see remote events.
My apple remote was working great with EyeTV on Snow Leopard, but when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, the Menu button stopped opening the on screen guide for EyeTV. I uninstalled PLEX, but still no luck. Very frustrating!
