Why does Mac OS X want to use the "login" keychain?

Ever since I updated to Mountain Lion I keep getting a request from the OS asking that I enter the keychain password....

Why does Mac OS X want to use the "login" keychain? How do I stop this window from popping up?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.4), 4G RAM, 500G HD, AEBS-N

Curious: If you open Keychain Access.app, what keychains do you see in the top left column? There should be

login

System

System Roots

Are there others there?

Also, how did you update your OS (i.e., on top of your old system, clean install, then migrated user(s), or what?

Don't know why your image didn't get posted. I've been having trouble with that, too, lately.

Thank you. I think you need to be Level 3 or above to use a custom avatar.

I get the same thing:

Worse still, the cursor flashes in the box and I can't enter the password; if I hit Cancel, then a new box replaces it. Put simply, I can't do a thing with it.

It seems to occur most when waking from sleep or logging back in, and when I've already entered the password to login, if you please!

I upgraded via the App Store straight on top of OSX Lion.

Totally redoing my keychains is not what I want to do…

I use both 1Password…… and several keychains [ login, System, X509Anchors, unknown (with no entries), PrivateEncryptedDatak, PrivateEncryptedDatak, System Roots ]

The problem arose only after doing the App Store Lion to Mountain Lion up grade.

The window ( see Michael Griffiths pict ) requesting me to enter my "login" password is NOT specific enough to let me know what the OS it trying to handshake with (other than. If I could discern what the OS it trying to handshake with I could set things up do it automatically ( or not).

Come on you secretly contributing Apple Corp. guys chime in… this constantly have to clear this window is interfering with my SANITY ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Ackkkk

Hey, I've had this issue too.

The thing I'm used to is the login keychain being unlocked from logging in. At first I thought this was not the case anymore, but when I was playing around with Keychain Access I found a neat little 'hidden' option pane. Richt click on the login keychain and one of the options in the pop up will be:

Change Settings for Keychain "login"...

I did that and found two check boxes that may have been giving you and me both fits:

[] Lock after [5] minutes of inactivity.

[] Lock after sleeping.

Hope this solves our issue.
