How to switch an iPod shuffle to another Apple ID

A friend is giving me her old iPod shuffle but neither of us know how to switch the unit over to my Apple ID. Obviously, now that it will be mine, I want the ability to download music to my account. Any ideas????

No, as I said in my first reply, the shuffle is not associated with an Apple ID. It is associated with an iTunes library. You don't even need to have an Apple ID to use it, if you don't buy and download content from the iTunes Store.

It is true that the existing content on the shuffle from your iTunes library will be erased, when she sets it up to sync from her iTunes library. If the shuffle has songs that you purchased from the iTunes Store using your Apple ID, iTunes may ask her if she wants to transfer those purchased songs to her iTunes library. In order to transfer those songs, she would need your Apple ID and password, but she can just decline and have iTunes erase the iPod to start syncing with her iTunes library.

iPods (that are not iPod touch) are associated with an iTunes library, not a particular Apple ID. Your iTunes Store account (your Apple ID) is separate. You can use an iPod even if you do not use the iTunes Store and therefore have no Apple ID.

When you connect it to your computer for the first time, and run iTunes, it should ask you if you want to sync the iPod to your iTunes library, erasing the current content. If you accept, the iPod will be associated with your iTunes library going forward.

If you decline, the iPod gets set to Manually manage music. To set it to sync to your iTunes library, select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar under DEVICES. Over to the right, go to the Music tab. That screen defines how you want iTunes to automatically sync the iPod to your iTunes library. When you set it up to sync music, and click the Apply button, the iPod will be associated with your iTunes library going forward. Existing songs on the iPod will be erased and replaced with songs from your iTunes library, based on how you set up the Music tab.

NOTE: If this is a 1st or 2nd gen shuffle, it works differently, so please post back. This article about iPod shuffle syncing lists the four types of shuffles (and provides more information).

The 1st and 2nd gen shuffle do not use automatic syncing like other iPods. When you connect it for the first time, iTunes may show a warning that existing content on the shuffle will be erased. It can only be associated with one iTunes library at a time.

If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. The shuffle appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES, when connected.

To load the shuffle manually, drag songs to it in the sidebar, from your main music library or playlists. The link in my previous reply has more information about loading content on shuffles.

You have to authorize her computer for your Apple ID, on her computer. The command is under the Store menu in iTunes. Your computer is not part of the process.

Also, the iPod-to-computer transfer that iTunes does is ONLY for song purchased from the iTunes Store (not other songs on the shuffle). Since these are your songs, you should not transfer them to her library (she does not own them). Instead, she should have iTunes erase the shuffle to start syncing it with songs from her iTunes library.
