The Samsung Galaxy S3 does not have USB Mass Storage mode, so you cannot mount it as a disk on your Mac or any other computer. I don't know if there are any software solutions for what you want to do.
But when i plug the phone into my windows pc or ubuntu laptop, the device is recognised and thus i am able to transfer files, music etc between computer and phone.
Something here may help... Note that the S3, since it runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0), no longer supports USB Mass Storage, while Macs (I believe this is true as of 10.8) do not support USB MTP mode which ICS uses instead.

Hej, I managed to sort it out. All i had to do was download an app and when i plugged in my s3, changed the usb option to "use as a camera" and there it was, I was able to moves files from my phone to mac with the click of a button!
Thanks for all the help!
Jamcla, glad to hear it.
Which app was it?
What version of OS X are you using?

If that is the case, it is possible that it also would have worked if you used the Image Capture utility that came with your Mac. You might want to try that out too.
I had the same issue, and someone pointed me towards and app called AirDroid that lets you connect you S3 to Mac wirelessly. So far its pretty perfect. I've used it to clean-up folders, rename files, upload and download music, pictures and audiobooks, so far no glitches.
Hope this helps,
⚠ you must download ℹ android file transfer ℹ and then you can do all what you nead))🙂 😝
As already mentioned, download and install Android File Transfer app . NOTE: To connect be sure to use the right cable- in my case, I discovered 2 cables - one is a USB plain one that just charges the phone. After much frustration I discovered there was another one (it has a Verizon label in my case.)They both seem to be USB cables but I discovered one works with Android File Transfer and not the other.
When I connected the wrong one, Android File Transfer said: No Android device found. Please connect your Android device with a USB cable to get started. I wasn't getting any notification or option on my phone to switch any configuration menu.
When I switched to the right cable however, I got a notification in the top notification area of the phone stating:
Connected as an installer and a USB icon next to it. Swiping down the top notification part there was yet another notification stating Connected as a media device. Touch for other USB options. Tapping on that statement I got the following screen:
USB PC Connection
Connect as
Media Device (MTP) box to check
xxx explanatory text which mentions you can sue Android File Transfer on a Mac in this mode
Camera (PTP) box to check
xxx explanatory text (transfer to PC that does not support MTP)
(Note that these options were not available and not displayed with the wrong cable. I noticed many users stating they don't see that menu, wonder if the culprit is the cable being used.)
I checked off MTP box and voila, clicking on the Android File Transfer icon I could see the files organized under Phone and Card and had access to them.
🙂
Heres my answer: samsung *****
Samsung certainly doesn't suck. Responding to someone who hasn't touched this thread in a year, just to say that, that *****.
For anyone wanting the answer, as mentioned above, it's simply installing this: http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
try HoRndis . i use that for usb tethering samsung s3 to mac 🙂
I FINALLY got my Samsung Galaxy S3 to work with the USB cord!! After completing step #3, wait a couple of minutes to give the Macbook and/or any of the softwares (Kies or Aperture) some time to recognize the S3. Thanks to this tip found in the comments here!
1. Unplug the USB cable
2. On the cell phone, dial the following number: *#7284# Once the last # is hit,
the PhoneUtil application is launched.
Choose USB -> Modem and then USB -> PDA mode.
The good mode should be PDA.
Even if the mode is PDA, switch to Modem and then back to PDA.
3. Plug the USB cable.
Now Kies should be able to find your phone..
LIFESAVER! Having bluetooth connectivity trouble after upgrading to Yosemite OS on my upgrade. Tried all the fixes, didn't work! My transfer port on my S3 recently broke as well 😟 Annoying! Anyways I was desperate to get these files off my phone, saw your post and searched. I found a similar app called WiFi File transfer, works perfect. Can view all my phones files and directories via my macbook web browser, and download/ rearrange! So awesome. Problem solved. Thanks!
