Q: wifi hot spot on the mac which the iPod recognises, but there is no network connection?

I have a mac book pro OS 10.6.8 with Airport Utility 5.6.1 and iPod Touch 5.1. I have created a wifi hot spot on the mac which the iPod recognises, but there is no network connection? I have tried the advice offered and there is no change. What can I do?
