Why won't iPhone 3GS update?

Question

My friends iPhone 3GS won't update to ios 5. She has a pc that is kind of slow but on her pc it says this iPhone cannot be synchronized. Any help?

Are you sure it is an iPhone 3GS? Does it have the Apple Compass App?

Yes it has the compass app and it is a iPhone 3gs because she still has The box and that's what it says. Do you know why this could be happening?

There are messages displaying on the screen which indicates why the update is failing, read them.

Um I have but that wouldn't really solve the problem I'm thinking would it be best to go to the apple store?

This is exactly what it says: This iPhone cannot be synchronized. The Apple Mobile Devise has not been started.
