iPhoto crashing!!

I have a MacBook pro running on version OS X 10.6.8.

When ever I open iPhoto, within 10 seconds or less it crashes again.

How can I fix this or just get all of those photos so I can save them on an external hard drive for safety?

I have created a new library which allows iPhoto to stay open but how can i then get all my photos from the old library to the new?

I am a relatively new user of Apple so please give answers easy to follow.
