    Thanks

When I connect shuffle to MacBook, the light flashes orange once then goes out.  It never appears under the devices section within iTunes.

I have confirmed shuffle is fully charged, using separate charger.  I am using the correct dock that came with the shuffle, and shuffle still syncs successfully to my old hp.  I am able to sync my iPhone and iPad to itunes using same USB port on MacBook.

I've just upgraded to Mountain Lion. It's a 2nd gen shuffle.

    Hope someone can help.

I just got back from the Apple Store and the consensus of 3 Geniuses was that my iPod Shuffle is "locked" into Windows only mode.    Appears to be a defect with the chipset to "lock" it into a Windows "mode"   I was able to show them successful connection and iTunes restore of the iPod Shuffle from my Windows 7 laptop while in the store but the Shuffle wouldn't show up on the Genius Bar Mac Airbook which didn't allow them to use the iPod Reset utility.    Their suggestion was to purchase a "refub" iPod Shuffle gen. 2 at $39 purchase, a new iPod Shuffle gen. 4 at $49 or be restricted to sync my iPod Suffle with only my Windows 7 laptop.

    Really!!??

Its a bit ironic that now I've bought an apple computer, I can no longer use my apple ipod.

    Thanks for the update.

Definitely odd.  Can you try restoring your Shuffle on the HP machine and then reconnecting it to your Mac?

Update: finally got around to pulling the HP out again.  Was able to connect successfully to my PC and restore the shuffle.

But alas, it still does not appear in my Mac's itunes.

That's definitely odd.  Does it at least appear in the finder as an externally mounted drive?

Do you have another iPod you could test out on your ML system?

    Thanks for your reply.

No, it does not appear in finder (or disc utility).

Yes, I have 2 other iPods that sync with no problems - classic and nano.

Sounds like a hardware issue with the Shuffle then meaning you'll need to have it serviced or replaced.

Having the same problem. Haven't used my Shuffle (2nd Gen) for quite a while... decided to charge it up and use it in the car to replace the (BORING!) radio... no lights, no charge. Tried it in on my MacBook, in a powered usb hub, but no joy. I'm guessing the battery is just flat and finished.

More than likely yes.  Lithium ion batteries need contact activity in order to maintain any sort of charge or ability to charge.

I have the same issue with my wife's second generation shuffle. Went through all trouble shooting and nothing works!!!!!!!!  Multiple people have the same problem.

It's likely hardware related then if you have already worked through all the troubleshooting.
