Can anyone tell me if it's possible to view my laptop's desktop on my HDTV using AppleTV or without AppleTV?

You are saying you need to get Airparrot software to see your screen. I just got the appletv (router?) from the apple store. At the store the sales person showed me the screen of the desktop on the screen. He did not say how. I guess my question is how?

Does appletv require an Apple TV or can you use it on a Samsung.

Airparrot software,  or buy a connector to connect the computer to your TV from Apple depending on what outputs it has.

Your MBP is too old for support under Mountain Lion for airplay.
