27 inch iMac running Mountain Lion (10.8)
I'd like to have one desktop called Mail, one called Photography, one called Editing etc and if possible, these names showing when I switch desktops via Mission Control.
Any suggestions?

Sorry, you can't rename them. Maybe a 3rd party will write a utility to do it.

Not possible. They're just Desktop 1, Desktop 2, and so on. You just have to set up a system and then remember your setup.

That's such a shame that no one at Apple has thought to include the option of renaming desktops. It'd sure help the workflow of someone like me.

I agree. This would be a necessary addition to be able to rename desktops. It's very difficult for me to really utilize the functionality of desktop without being able to have the label for each one that I'm using

Lanny, how would assigning shortcut keys to the desktops help me in my workflow?
What I want it to label each desktop appropriate to its use. E.g.
Web
Photography
Video
Audio
etc...
Currently, I can't do this and this is a shame as to do so would help smooth my workflow

I personally brought this up with one of the big bosses in UK Joint Ventures last week and he has pushed it to the global head of JV so it might come down in a later version...

I did ICT support for 12 years before this job so I pointed out that our Joint Ventures interactions were not good enough and Apple sat up and took notice!
Now that was very cool!
What you can do is set a different desktop picture for each desktop. That can help remember where you are and be creative about your desktop pictures.

Jay Kappmeier, that's a good idea. I could embed the name of the desktop in the picture I use.

I used a leather background with an Apple logo in the center. I edited the wallpaper and created separated instances with numbers in the center of the Apple logo. Assign them to the proper desktop and its easy to see which one you are using.
