iMessages not sending?

I have an iPhone 4s, 5.1.1. Yesterday my phone was working fine, then all of a sudden out of nowhere really late around 1am my iMessages wouldn't send, and I'd have to send the messages as texts instead. Now today randomly iMessages will send and go through fine, but otherwise they won't send and I have to send them as texts. My interenet connection is fine and I have no idea what's happening, it's so annoying though.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

That's how imessage works, if it is unavailable it will send it as a text.

I know that, but it just stopped randomly working last night. It doesn't automatically send as text either, it sits as the blue bubble without saying 'delivered' and then when I realize it hasn't sent I have to send it as a text. Thanks for the troubleshooting link, I'm trying that now.

No problem. I've had problems sending pics in imessage also, I think I've sent it then I see the red exclamation mark, I usually have to resend it again for it to go thru.

That happed to me today also but then for other pics it worked. My internet is fine so I am just confused as to how my imessages became so shotty last night!

sometimes it helped when i turned my iphone off and back on and other times it helped to turn imessage off and back on.

UPDATE YOUR IOS TO IOS 6 !!!

Go to settings, messages, make sure that MMS is on.

To send and receive MMS messages on your iPhone, verify that your wireless carrier supports MMS².
Ensure that MMS Messaging is turned on in Settings > Messages.
Verify that your phone is able to access cellular data.
- Some carriers allow you to edit your APN (Access Point Name), which may prevent MMS from working.
- If you are roaming outside your calling area, make sure you have Data Roaming turned on in Settings > General > Cellular to send or receive MMS content.
- While on a phone call, you will be unable to send or receive MMS messages when using an EDGE, GPRS, or any CDMA cellular data network. After the phone call ends, you will receive any incoming messages. If you tried to send an MMS message, you may need to send it again.
If the issue persists and your wireless carrier has confirmed that your wireless account is provisioned² for MMS, restore the iPhone.
