Q: Power Nap: Refreshing other Applications and using 3rd Party VPN
With Mountain Lion, Power Nap was introduced allowing compatible Mac to get things done silently when it goes to sleep. After reading the documentation and through my own experimentation, I had a couple follow-up questions.
Question 1
Based on the following documentation, it states…
Applications and features that are configured use Power Nap
Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Notes, Photo Stream, Find My Mac, Time Machine, Spotlight, the Mac App Store, Software Updates, Help Center and Documents in the iCloud are already Power Nap-aware. You don't need to do anything to configure them to be used with Power Nap.
Follow-up questions:
- Is this implying that only these applications are “allowed” to refresh / update during the Power Nap wake cycle?
- Can other applications not on this list (Apple developed or from 3rd party ISV / developers) update and refresh during the Power Nap wake cycle?
- Do applications need to be developed specifically to update or refresh during Power Nap wake cycle? If so, is there a SDK reference?
- Do applications need to be authorized by Apple to update or refresh during Power Nap wake cycle? If so, is there a process or is it reserved for Apple’s use only?
Question 2
Also, based on the following documentation, it states…
About Virtual Private Network connections and Power Nap
VPN connections that use a certificate to authenticate are supported, but not VPN connections that require entering a password.
Follow-up question:
- Are 3rd Party VPN solutions, such as Cisco AnyConnect, supported with Power Nap? Can they be used during the Power Nap wake cycle to connect to the private network (i.e. to refresh corporate e-mail) or does Power Nap just support the native OS X VPN client?
