Default User Pictures viewer results empty

Hi guys, first of all I just wanna say that I'm italian... So, sorry for my bad english.

The problem is:

I've done a clean install of Mountain Lion. Maybe as you know, Desktop Pictures and User Pictures that the ML package contains are only the new ones ('cause it's a simply update).

So... many months ago, with Lion, I've just copied the old Desktop Pictures and User Pictures of Snow Leopard and put them in the corrispective folders in the Library of the Macintosh HD.

With ML: No problems with Desktop Pictures, Mountain Lion has recognized them and showed on the desktop picture preferences. But, with the User Pictures and the new browser/viewer (the tiny popup window that appears when you try to change the picture), the "Default" menu results empty!

I even tried to make a new user and the viewer still doesn't recognize the pictures in the folder. I also tried to drag and drop single folder and sigle pictures into the viewer.

Any suggestions? I know, it's not a big problem, but it's very annoying!

Thanks in advance.

I've had the same problem, if you launch console, it logs the following messages:

There are messages that are logged at the same time, not sure if these are relevant.

I did try changing permissions on the User Pictures folder - changed group from wheel to staff.

This worked and the default pictures appeared, but then next time, it was back to no pictures.

Anyone help?

I've managed to fix this - I had modified my User Pictures folder on 10.7 - and then I installed my custom set in 10.8.

Now, I had removed some folders and this seems to be the key.

I restored all the default folders, but I was still able to remove some image files and all was OK. I even added some extra image files obtained from the net.

It is OK to have some empty folders too.

It all works as it should now, so, just keep the default folder structure.

Moral: Stop tinkering with the OS.

The delete .DS_Store does not always work. It had no effect for me. And in my case no folder structure changed or anything else -it simply went bad. The defect occurred in an image so every computer imaged had the problem. Trying to resolve it by migrating the standard created users from the the defective image to a new image produced the same problem in any computer receiving the users. Diskwarrior pronounced everything clean. Permissions fine, no ACL problems. Just a really annoying problem. After trying all of the solutions provided on the web to no avail and asking several Apple people (who did not even know about the problem) I logged in as root and trashed the old user icon images file then copied the folder from a ML factory disk image. Worked. And so it goes.

I found a simple solution that worked on my Macbook Air running 10.8.4 which was missing all the User pictures when I tried to access them as the computer administrator even through they wer all there in the User Pictures folder in the Library.

I went into the Library Folder and trashed the "User Pictures" Folder.

I then copied the User Pictures folder from my Macbook Pro that did not have this issue and installed in on the Macbook Air in place of the User Pictures folder I had trashed. Then it all worked fine.
