How to open transferred IIgs appleworks files on Mac?

My cousin has many years of Appleworks files authored on a IIgs that she needs to bring into Appleworks on the Mac.

We can get them to the Mac, but cannot open them in Appleworks on the Mac.

All suggestions are appreciated!

TIA

I'm glad you're able to get the files to the Mac since that is the toughest part. AppleWorks 6 doesn't have translators for Classic AppleWorks or AppleWorks GS. AppleWorks 5 & all versions of ClarisWorks have translators for AppleWorks GS word processing, but not SS, DB or page layout, & Classic AppleWorks WP, SS & DB. Because AppleWorks 6 is unpredictable in opening ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files, I suggest using AppleWorks or ClarisWorks 5. For inexpensive options to buy AppleWorks or ClarisWorks 5, try eBay and do a search for "ClarisWorks", "Claris Works", "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name).

Using AppleWorks/ClarisWorks 5 does require using Classic/OS 8/9. You have not provided the model of Mac to be used for the translation. Classic does not run on Intel Macs, so a Power PC Mac would need to be used. It is always a good idea, especially when asking for help, to show information about your computer & OS. You would much more likely to get specific suggestions & your problem is likely to be solved much sooner.

I have no idea what AppleIIfFreak's message means. If you are using OS X 10.2 or higher, the earliest stable version of AppleWorks 6 is 6.2.4.

Just tested both AWgs(Clarisworks 1.1) and Clarisworks 5 onPM7600/OS9.1
You can transport AWIIgs files on ProDOS formatted disks to PM- and use Import-function of Clarisworks5(Appleworksgs) to get the files to CW 5. Then you can save them as CW5 files that should be opened by AW 6.
You can also format disks on IIgs as HFS-didn't test this yet.
For peggy:
He uses
Quicksilver dual 1Ghz with external floppy--can run either OS 9.2.2 or OS 10.3.5)

And I'm supposed to be psychic? No where in his or your posts does it say. I have to make a lot of assumptions. Full details in any post asking for help will get solutions a lot faster.

Also, this response of yours, AppleIIFreak, is a bit of a jumble & is difficult to understand. I do know I have explained this whole process of moving files from an Apple II to a Mac in the past.

You are absolutely right - the only one to blame is me!
I apologise-justed wanted to help.
Got info about Keith' AW-version and Mac here:

My second post here only referred to that transfer-problem to the Mac using IIgs formatted 800k disks-he seems to use 1,4MB.
I still remember your quick help on that matter-but these posts seem to be all gone.

OK. When Keith posts back we'll go from there. I'll do a little more "digging" & see if I can find what I wrote before. I'm sure I saved it. I'm hanging on to at least one older Mac with System 7-something & a functioning floppy drive to move files back & forth.

I found it. It's from February/March of last year.
The biggest problem is getting the files from the Apple IIgs to the Mac. I'm not sure that OS 9 is able to read ProDOS disks. I think (but I'm not positive) the last was OS 8.1. If you do have access to a 3.5" drive for the Apple II, you can transfer the files. The problem is that Apple II disks are 800K (double-density, not high-density) disks. There were HD 3.5" drives made for the Apple IIgs, but very few users had them & they required GSOS 6. None of the USB floppy drives available can read these older disks. If you have access to an older Mac or can e-mail the files from the IIgs, this will solve that part of the problem. An elementary school might be able to help you. Or, perhaps, one of the few Apple II User Groups still in existence.

Although both programs are named AppleWorks they are not the same. AppleWorks 6 for the Mac does not have translators for classic AppleWorks or AppleWorks GS for the Apple II. Earlier versions of ClarisWorks & AppleWorks 5 for the Mac do have translators for classic AppleWorks word processing, spreadsheets & databases as well as AWGS word processing. To transfer AWGS spreadsheet or database files, the best option is to save them as ASCII text (SS or DB), SLYK (SS) or DBF (DB) on the IIgs before transferring them to the Mac. It is also possible that MacLink Plus by DataViz has the translators.

For inexpensive options to buy AppleWorks 5 or ClarisWorks 5, try eBay and do a search for "Clarisworks", "Claris Works" or "AppleWorks" (some people put a "space" in the name). However, AppleWorks 6.2.9 cannot open a lot of ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files.

Keith Koenning1...

If you are from the US, Sun Remarketing, has been known to sell older Mac related software versions such as ClarisWorks. If it isn't on their website I suggest in calling them. Just last week they was able to find CW 4.0 that saved a young lad's day when his CW 4 software went belly up that was on floppies.

I managed to get a old beige G3 (OS 8.6) that they were throwing out at work. That is the machine that will be used to transfer/convert the files.

It sounds like I will have to find a copy of ClarisWorks 5 for use as a translator. Is this the name of this software or is it known as Appleworks 5?

Thanks for your help.

P.S.

Was the needed version of ClarisWorks supplied with any Mac?

AppleWorks/ClarisWorks 5 was probably included on consumer Macs from about 1997 - 2000, Performas (if they were still being made) & iMacs. I do know it was included as a separate install CD with my mother's Bondi iMac in 1998. I suggest eBay because other sites such as Shreve Systems, Sun Remarketing or MacTreasures have prices that I think are much too high for such old software. It's possible that Amazon might have someone selling it used. Still another possibility is a local thrift or used bookstore.

There is a current auction for ClarisWorks Office (which is ClarisWorks 5) on eBay here. It won't be necessary to update it for what you want to do.
