Ipod mini "Disk Write Error"

I recently tried to restore my iPod mini (for the umpteenth time) after having numerous problems with songs not playing. I connected it to the computer fine, brought up the updater and when I tried to restore it came up "Unable to update firmware. Disk Write Error." I've tried this on two different PC's and got the same response, and gone through the step by step on the support website. Help anybody?
