In Lion one could copy a photo from a LinkedIn contact and paste this into the contact in the "Address Book" application.
In Mountain Lion this copy/paste process fails and you need to save the photo and then manually drag it to the contact in the new "Contacts" application.
Any ideas on how to work around this?

If you can copy the image, you can paste it.
Just double click the image field in Contacts, click on Recents, make sure none is selected, i.e. click on an empty square (so you don't lose any others) and paste.
