Mobile home not working properly on Mountain Lion server

I have been having major issues with getting mobile homes working on Mountain Lion. I have created a test user and group called testuser and testgroup in users and groups on the server and made testuser a member of testgroup. Then in profile manager (server.mydomain.com/profilemanager) I have enabled Mobility for testgroup and then under Account Creation checked:

  • Create mobile account when user logs in to network account
  • Require confirmation before creating mobile account
  • Show "Don't ask me again" checkbox

Then under Rules->Options

Show status in menu bar

Also to give some visible verification that it is working I go to Dock settings and set position to left.

Then I hit OK, Save and Save again.

From the client machine login screen I enter testusers login details. I do NOT get asked to create a mobile account on the local machine and go straight to a new desktop with the dock at the bottom. After the computer has fully loaded (waiting a few seconds) the computer seems to update and then the dock moves to the right. This seems to signify that the computer is only just applying the testuser settings.

I log out and back in using testuser's login details again and what do you know... It asks me if I want to create a mobile account. I select yes and it loads as expected. HOWEVER once loaded the little Home Sync icon in the top right hand corner has an exclamation mark next to it signifying there was a problem. So if I click on it and select "Sync Home Now" I get a message saying "No folders are selected to be Synced".

I log back out of testuser.

Looking back at profile manager I check and make sure there are rules set for Home Sync... And Yes there are. ~/ (the home folder) is set to sync. No matter what I change I cant get the thing to sync.

NOW HERE COMES THE FUNNY PART! If I deleted the entire Mobility rule from testgroup and hit OK, Save and Save. I note that active tasks shows 1 task sending (for some reason these will not send until I log in as the user). When I log in as testuser again what happens?... It starts Home Syncing... Just when I have turned it off from profile manager.

Somebody please help... This is terrible!

I sort of hesitate to jump in with all of my ignorance, particularly with no Mountain Lion experience, but I have seen in other threads that apple's recommendation was for Mobility settings to NOT use profile manager but to use good old Workgroup Manager. Now this rec was for Lion Server. I had heard that WGM was a goner in Mountain Lion, but I have seen some posts that it still lives for 10.8. If that is true, you might try getting and using that and see if it makes any difference for mobility. For those other issues in this thread, well . . . .

In any case, good luck, sounds very exasperating.

I have been in contact with Apple support and been asked to submit some technical data so that they can analyse it. I hope to hear back from them soon. I will post any news as soon as I have some. In the mean time if anybody else is having this issue post here or let Apple know. The more people who report it the higher the priority to fix.
