Whenever I switch on my screensaver, my 2012 MacBook Pro (non-Retina Display) freezes, forcing me to do a 'hard restart', holding down the power button. I've tried it with both Apple's screensavers and the one third-party screensaver I have, each with the same result.
Has anyone else noticed this issue or have a workaround? Thanks!

Having same problem....have 2007 iMac and have screensaver when it tiles it works but I think the energy saver that puts the hard disk in sleep is what is causing it not to wake
That or my time capsule which was never Apple's finest moment, if it is backing up and it sleeps or screensaves my system locks
Not much data in console to point to the problem. Do you see anything in console logs?

I don't see anything in my logs either, but I admit I'm not an expert at looking through them. I yanked out the one third party screensaver I had in the pane, and will retry without it. I think it could be somehow related to Energy Saver, as I don't have the issue on battery power.
Yes! I'm having this same problem. With my MacBook Pro with Retina Display running Mountain Lion plugged in to a Thunderbolt display, the computer freezes when I attempt to use it after going into screensaver mode for more than a few minutes. Driving me crazy. Need a fix.
I'm having the same problem too with my Macbook Pro retina, whether in clam shell mode and using my 27 inch display, or just on the pro's 15 inch display. This is a problem I think Apple should acknowledge and correct.
After removing the one third party screensaver, repairing disk permissions, and setting the screensaver to "Message", things seem to be okay. I've left the screensaver on various times ranging from a few seconds to 30 minutes with no issue.
I'm going to test one of the other screensavers to see if I can recreate the issue again.
I have no third party screen savers, and I'd like to watch my iphoto folders play, which is what I use as a screen saver. I've tried various effects, and that doesn't solve the issue. I will repair permissions.
I just had another crash. Things seemed to work fine with the Message screensaver, but I switched to the "Floating" slideshow to see if I could replicate the error again. I let the screensaver come on automatically (20 minutes), and sure enough when I came back and deactivated it, the system froze.
Looking at console logs, I see the following right when the screensaver kicked in, notice the change in date, even though it's well before midnight 8/2/12 as I write this. The series of messages repeats itself several times, and may indicate an issue with photo slideshows and the way Mountain Lion handles graphics:

Here's the latest...I started having issues where the App Store would crash, as well as Safari behaving weirdly. I ended up doing a clean install of the OS and migrating my data and apps by hand. Everything seems much more stablle now.
I'm thinking there wsa some component of an earlier OS that could have been corrupting the installation of Mountain Lion, or the first copy of Mountain Lion I downloaded was corrupted. One interesting note is that after installing my apps and migrating my files, I'd saved about 20 gig of hard drive space over my prior installation.
I seemed to have solved the problem by unchecking put the hard disk to sleep when possible in the energy saver preferences, which is an unneccessary option for ss drives.
I find the sleep hard disk resolves the issue AND do not choose iPhoto library as the slide screensaver. Our iPhoto library is huge and it seems to lock the system while trying to gather the photos

I've already had that unchecked, as well as not choosing iPhoto as a screensaver and I am still experience this Nvidia error and crashing. I have done a complete reinstall with no luck. I suspect most of these replies thinking they have solved the issue just haven't had the issue pop up lately. I suggest waiting a few days and making sure you have no freezing. The only thing that has seemed to decrease freezing for me is disabling the screen saver.
I'm having the same issue on my MBPr 2012. I figured it was something to do with the automatic grahpics switching so I unchecked that but I've still had freezes following that change. It seems only be an issue when I have an external display connected via the Thunderbolt port.

Me too. I have the same problem.
But it only happens when it is connected to my HP222 external display.
my retina macbook pro when I try to log back onto my desktop from screensaver.
Chiming in to express that I'm having the same issue as the OP.
Hardware: MacBookPro Retina with 2.7 i7 & 16GB RAM upgrades. Connecting to 24" Apple Cinema Display (ACD) through thunderbolt at office. And connecting to another 24" ACD at home.
OS: Mountain Lion 10.8.1 installed from App Store after upgrading from original Snow Leopard install that came with computer.
Only when in the office, and only when connecting to the 24" ACD display there am I experiencing freezes from the screen saver. I connect to multiple LCD displays throughout the day and do not have this issue. This display has been fine for the past 2.5 years and has worked with multiple MB Pros (2009 15", 2010 17") and an Air (2011 11").....also with Mountain Lion upgraded the same way. Only the Retina has this issue with this 1 display. Very weird.
I use the same standard OSX Arabesque screen saver on all machines.
