nothing plugged into USB ports is recognized - only things appearing under USB are Bluetooth USB Host Controller and IR Receiver
external drive, camera, and phone are not recognized when plugged in (although phone receives power)

Thanks but no luck. I followed the process in the link (even though it's a mac mini and not a laptop) but no fix. I restarted it with the iphone plugged in and the phone did register in the USB list in the system profiler, but didn't actually connect or show up on the desktop, and neither did any other device.
In Finder>Preferences>General> what is checked to show?
Everything is checked except connected servers.
Turns out I had the mistaken impression that anything plugged into USB would show up immediately in the system profiler list, and I see now that it doesn't. Now that I look into it more it seems that the problem may just be in the Lacie USB hard drive I'm trying to connect.
Having said all that, an ipod which is plugged in does connect to itunes, but doesn't show up on the desktop, even though that option is checked.

Might try toggling those prefs OFF then back ON, then leave that pref window open.
LaCie drives often need a replacement PSU...
