In Mountain Lion, the icon for inserted drives doesn't show up on my desktop, and I cannot find any option in System Preferences for turning this feature on our off. What am I missing? (Now, of course, I can find the drive under the "GO" drop-down menu in Finder, but not on the desktop, like in every other Mac OS!)

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. But my General tab in System Prefernces doesn't have that tick box. Look...

Hi,
I have External Hard Drives selected in my Finder preferences.........so why don`t the icons come up for any USB drive?
They did before the last software update, around half September 2012.
Any pointers would be much obliged!
I guess this can be fixed with a terminal command.
