PowerPoint for Mac (2011) Slide Transition Problems After Installing Mountain Lion

I use PowerPoint 2011 on my MacBook Pro and after installing Mountain Lion yesterday I am having slide transition problems. A lot of my PowerPoint transitions don't work properly (despite Microsoft's assurance that MS Office was ready for Mountain Lion!). The bottom of the slides disappear while many of the 3-D and rotational transitions are happening. Very distracting. I installed the latest MS Office update. If you know of a fix or link to helpful articles, that would be much appreciated. Thanks! –Charlie

Not sure how many people follow this discussion closely. The fix was just released last night so not many have probably checked it out yet.

It really does work for me at least! On both machines I use and on multiple tests.

I would really like someone else to try it out and verify it though.

If you are so inclined - please try it out and see if it works for you and let me know.

I am 99% convinced it is fixed.

Great!

Tried some more presentations this AM and transitions continue to work properly!

Thanks for confirmation that it is working for others.

From the Microsoft board documenting the same problem it appears this is a "workaround" or if you prefer "patch" by Microsoft but it does not address a basic bug in the NVidia OpenGL driver. So.... it would be ideal to have the graphics driver fixed to ensure it does not present a problem in other places.

So far with my testing, things are looking much, much better, but I am still seeing the problem in some cases. Most slides seem to transition fine, with the problem in the lower quarter of the screen no longer occurring.

But I'll still see the problem consistently when transitioning from slides with a full screen, dark background to a new slide containing a brighter image.

For example, I often do presentations where I "screen out" the background in order to highlight one specific area of the slide. If I fade the screenout graphic in, then transition to a new slide, it will trigger the problem in the lower portion of the screen.

I have created a simple test deck using a stock Microsoft template and image that reproduces the problem consistently on my system. The problem is easily visible when transitioning between slides 2 and 3 in this test deck. If anyone wants to try this out, the test deck is available at the following link:

It would be very interesting to hear if other folks see the problem using these slides.

I can also confirm that this 'patch' does not fully resolve the issue. I have an 80% improvement factor on my presentations but there are clearly still 'tearing' issues and related inconsistencies. This may be better than nothing, but it still prevents me from fully using transitions in my presentations. Ultimately, this is a big dissappointment.

Not the same problem, but perhaps related: I'm running Powerpoint for Mac 2011, 14.3.2, on a Macbook Air Intel Core i5 with OS X 10.8.2. During a slideshow, the slides advance normally for a while, using either a USB remote or the keyboard arrows. Then they stop advancing, and respond to nothing - not the remote, the keyboard, or even the escape key. I have to manually exit the slideshow, then reselect the slide before the one I was on, then start advancing again. This happens 4 - 5 times in an hour presentation.

No one on the MS support site has a solution, so I doubt Apple does, either, but it's worth a shot.

hughejd...your problem is well documented here at:

I have suffered severely with a smimilar problem to you. There are two fixes - one is to uninstall Office and re-install WITHOUT the updates.

The second option which is a hassle - but is the one that worked for me - is to completely re-install Mountain Lion from scratch! I had mine done at an Apple Service Centre - then re-installed Office and the 'freezing' issue was completely resolved AND I was also able to re-install ALL the office updates as well.

These incompatibilities between Apple and Microsoft are getting worse - and the fixes taking longer and longer - not to mention outdated drivers! The gloss of Apple is wearing thin for me...as much as I love the products!
