My MacBook pro with Mountrain Lion keeps freezing randomly

Hi,

After I updated my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion, it keep freezing randomly. This happens on normal usage, where the Mac isn't overloaded or has alot of apps running. When it freezes, I can still move my mouse and I can still hear the music from Spotify in the background, but I can't click anything or use any keyboard shortcuts.

I've found this in my crash logs:

Uncheck all apps starting up at log-in, log out and relog in. Problem might be solved.

Another simple solution is to create a new user, log out and log into that new user and see what happens.

In both cases, things may turn OK.

Hey @etresoft,

I`m really sorry if I did looks like a "hijacking" because it for sure wasn`t my intention at all.

I`ve just asked at the Mountain Lion forums because also looks like that there are much more than one unique topic telling about the same subject and so I did so.

PS: I`ve just started to use the Apple forums as well and so I do not know even how to create a thread here right now.

Have a great wkd,

Cheers,

Some more detail (although I don't know if anyone is interested)

This occurs more frequently when I'm using an external display - 6+ freezes a day, mostly VMware fusion as I run that full screen on the external monitor.

When I'm just using the internal screen, I get 3 or less occurances, mostly on Apple Mail.

Always the same experience, app freezes, then responds several seconds later.

Window server reenables after n seconds.

Well, after the third one I got a little annoyed 🙂

At the top, right hand side of the window, under "Actions" there is a "Start a discussion" link.

Describe your problem and the software you have installed. Feel free to run the little diagnostic program I wrote named "EtreCheck". It will list all of the most important details. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results in your new thread.

As you have been powering down your machine, you have a a corrupt hard drive by name. The first step is to reboot and hold down the option key to run your Recovery volume. Run Disk Utility and repair your startup disk. As long as you're there, repair permissions too. That is unlikely to help the freezing, but it will repair any damage you may have done in the meantime by powering off your machine instead of shutting down.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

Go to Applications and open Disk Image. Click on the indented disk drive at the top left hand side, should be called something like "**** 's iMac". Go to the bottom right hand side and select "Verify Disk". Follow the prompts.

It had me restart the computer while holding down R-Command and then reopen Disk Image and select "Repair Disk" seemed to speed everything up and stop the crashes.

I just did a bit more testing. On quitting FCP X (recreating the hang), if any graphic element is moved (i.e. causes a redraw), it will hang. It always comes back to life after < 10 sec, fortunately. For instance, quitting to the desktop, and moving the arrow cursor will be fine. But, try dragging an icon and it will hang - provided you do it within 10 sec or so of quitting FCP X. There's no doubt some cleaning up that's done when FCP quits that will hang if any graphic element needs redrawing.
