Q: Sound Effects Not working Correctly in Mail 6.0 or Notification Center...

I recently installed Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro (2012 Retina Screen, 2.7 GHz Core i7, 16 GB RAM) and all the sound effects are no longer working in the new version of Mail 6.0. There are also Sound Effect problems with the Notification Center.

I double checked and all my settings appear to be correct in Mail and in the Sounds & Notification Center Pref Panes.  I also did a PRAM reset to see if that would fix it, and that made no difference either.  In Mail, only some sounds are working. I still get the swoosh sound when mail is sent but not any of the other sounds like when email is deleted or received.  Also, my speakers are working fine for audio etc.

I called Apple Care and the technician had me on the phone for a while and researched this, but said he could find nothing that was known or had been reported on this issue. As an FYI, to the best of my knowledge I'm not running any incompatible apps.  Every app I am running is listed as being compatible with ML.

Has anyone else had this issue with the Mail and Notification Center Sound Effects?  I would appreciate any solutions or suggestions.

Thanks...

Patrick

    Patrick,

I have experienced the same symptoms.

Opening Audio MIDI Setup, and changing the Built-in Output>Format to another choice (2ch-20bit Integer) and then back to the prvious setting (2ch-24bit Integer) briefly fixes the lack of Mail sounds, but unfortunately the problem eventually returns after computer sleep.

I have tried a Safe Boot, and removed the Audio MIDI plist without success.

i'm finding disfunction in the alert sounds of Mountain Lion as well, but mine is the opposite problem. i DON'T get a swoosh sound when mail is sent, and can't seem to find where the swoosh sound settings even live in mountain lion.

    anyone know anything?

The proposed fix works... temporarily.... but the same issue is back. Not a permanent fix.

A few other bugs I have noticed with Mountain Lion as well.

    1. On a newer iMac it takes forever to wake from sleep. Works okay on my MBP and an older iMac.

    2. Sound effects are not working when placing something into trash and when emptying trash.

    3. Mission control not working all the time. Have to kill the Dock and it comes back.

I hope these issues are fixed in the next update.

well, in Mail they're supposed to be "alerts" but yes, given their intermittent functioning I would agree, they are now nothing more than "sound effects".  worst of all, intermittent ones. keeping a good mood-- now, obviously, many others are experiencing the very same thing.  come in Big Apple :-)

but annoying - at least when they ARE functioning you get a confirmation that you've sent a mail, or conversely that you don't have any new mail. when they work sometimes and become silent at others - when they go silent on you (a bug from way back before even Leopard) you are left wondering whether the function has been accomplished or not, and after sending mail I find myself so often having to look back in the 'sent' box to see if really was sent.  time-wasting to say least...

Yes, quitting the "coreaudiod" process using Activity Monitor brought back my Sent Mail sound effect!

update: the problem seems to crop up again, over time. Quitting the coreaudiod will fix it, but only a matter of time before the issue happens again. Funny thing about when it starts working again: it plays every single sound effect that should've played, so I get a deluge of sounds after fixing.

to me it's just downright annoying - should be the most basic thing to have working properly....

I am having the same mail sound issues. I have been trying to isolate when I lose mail sounds and I think it might be after a wake-up from sleep. Quitting mail and restarting seems to help .. for a while. This is happening on all of my computers.

guess wot ! i've isolated it - the programmers haven't finished their job and the marketers have released it. should we all have to become a band of amateur computer trouble-shooters just for this?

the more people tag onto this thread and reveal the problem, surely Apple can kindly fix it...

of course if it's a conflict from some '3rd party' software other than Apple's that is, that would be another thing...

wow, I tried the temporary fix above and about a week of send email swooshing went on - I had it on  full volume and had to hide under the table....

Actually I didn't understand the instructions above - I opened sound effects in settings, and changed everything and changed it back again. output, input sound effects. It was one of them. question is how long will the fix last.
