Does Airplay only work for certain Apps?

I have the New iPad and I have the new Apple TV 1080p version....my new iPad and Apple TV airplay will work together (audio and video) for news (ABC) videos and it will work for UTube, but it will not work with Direct TV, ABC series player, or any other content player that has the throw it up there on the TV icon. On those types of Apps, only the audio works on the TV, not the video. I have read and read and read trying to see if I could fix the problem, but is it a problem that I can fix, or are those items just actually blocked content by Apple somehow and will not ever work with both the video and the audio at the same time on my TV?

Thanks.

The icon is there by default, it isn't Apple that chooses to enable AirPlay for video or not, it's up to the developer of the app. It wouldn't work if Apple had it set up to disappear if no enabled video content was detected, some apps such as radio station apps don't need video to be useful, removing the AirPlay icon when no enabled video content was detected would stop these apps working.
