    They removed it.

And yes, it was incredibly stupid of Apple to do this.  Not all of us use trackpads in Preview, we need to be able to scroll within a single page using a Mouse.

This is extremely frustrating. I do not use the Apple mouse, I prefer my Razer Death Adder.

How can we work without a hand? Unbelievable. Please give us back our hand.

Many pro users use a graphic tablet, Apple!

WE NEED A PAN TOOL (HAND TOOL) FOR THE VIEW PORT IN EVERY APPLICATION AND IN OS X!

Yes Apple you're losing touch with designers which are your original clientele. We need to use a mouse or graphic tablet.

I have just started using preview in Mountain Lion and had the need to use then hand tool (or its shortcut) to move faster and precisely within the document. I know I can use the arrows or the scroll bars but it is not the same. The square selection works but only within the same page. If you move to other you have to draw another selection and move it, but again, only withing that page,..., what a pain!

One can argue that I should move on and get a track pad: in fact I have one but not always use (batteries ran down from time to time, or sometimes is more precise to use the mouse).

Please Apple, put it back. I do not understand why this feature was annoying anyone at all and no, I do not want to install Adobe Reader for this, that is why I have a Mac and not a Pc. I wonder if the removal of the hand tool has made the OS faster, really? Please, put it back we are really missing it and, again, I do not want to install acrobat for this, nor use it if I already had it installed, but use the system tools to the most extent possible.

    Apple -

Apple used to be the company that made the human computer interface intuitive and the hand tool was a simple example of that approach.  That and the fact that the OS X is based on unix and I'm a long time unix person helped convert me solidly to mac about 5 years ago.

Absent the hand tool and using a standard non-apple mouse (I don't like the apple mice), it takes me multiple key strokes or mouse moves to scroll around a pdf document and this is frustrating.   I really don't understand why more people aren't frustrated by this but whatever the reason, it bugs the heck out of me so I've switched to Adobe Reader.

Hopefully this type of lame design isn't a trend for apple because if it is, I will  certainly be motivated to give other platforms a try.

It's still there. It's just hard to find. Hold down option and space.

    You’re real genius!

The only downside is, this doesn’t work in Finder Windows or in Safari.
