Verbatim DVDs not playing back in Imac (i3)

Most common origin to this is - BURN SPEED ==> amount of burn errors on disk

I always set down the Burn Speed to x2 - to get an as error free burn possibly.

And I only use Verbatim DVD-R ( -R plays on more and even older DVD-players)

In theory the slower the burn speed the better the media can be read.

There is no way to control the burn speed out of DSP.

I build our projects to a folder and then burn that in Toast. I do not burn DVDs above 4x.

Are you burning pre-printed verbatim or the white ink-jet printable?

I prefer the latter.

Slow burn speed was good advice 6-8 years ago, not so much today... Media like Verbatim and Taiyo-Yuden/JVC do not require slow burning if the burner is in good condition. In fact, the majority of problems I've seen in the past 5 years have been burners wearing out. We burn everything at 8x or 16x with way below 1% failure.

You probably don't need another voice in this discussion, but I'd just mention that high data rates can give some players fits. So I routinely lower the bit rates of certain Compressor DVD presets to keep them under 7.5 Mbs maximum and in the 6.0 to 6.5 Mbs average range…in the interests of wider playability.

DVD Video discs are always standard def.

Your HD version won't work directly in a set top player, the user will have to copy it to a computer first. Are you sure the recipients are savvy enough to realize that? Give them a reason to complain, you can be sure that they will.
