Q: IMac vs macPro vs Mac Book Pro

Dear Users

I am a student of film and television production, and need a computer which I can use to edit lengthy (45 mins) Full HD videos without struggling with the slowness of the station.

The software I was planning to use is Final Cut Pro 7, since I have read that Final Cut X has compatibility problems with numerous cameras (64-bit).

I was wondering what the optimum choice was, between the IMac, MacPro and Mac Book Pro, provided the fact that the university allows us to use their MacPros, and that I need to have a degree of mobility when editing (e.g. in the summer period I will have to edit abroad).

Which would you say is my best choice?

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Well... I think you've answered your own question.  personally, I'll always take a mac pro over the other two for the expandability offered: capture cards, external raids, etc.  The imac is really the b*stard child in the middle-- you can have thunderbolt storage and a nice big screen but other connectivity, capture cards, etc is still out there somewhere in the ether.

If you need to be portable, your only choice really is a macbook pro and a thunderbolt storage device of one type or another.  I can't imagine trying to stuff an imac in a knapsack.

Thank you very much for your kind answer. I think I will go for a Mac Book Pro, for the simple reason that I need to be able to do the editing in various cities. Moreover, I will be able to exploit the university's Mac Pros when needed!

thank you again for your help!
