Q: Time Capsule is full. Transferring to a new storage device.

I have a 1tb Time Capsule that is almost full and will no longer take the back ups with time machine.

I have purhcased a 3tb WD firewire 800 drive that I am connecting directly to my imac to use for the time machine back ups.

I attempted to transfer the old back ups to the new time machine without success.

I set the new time machine going regardless as I wanted to install Mountain Lion (and indeed have done).

I have been unsuccesful in transferring the old back ups to the new time machine and I am now unable to find the old Time Capsule "data" disc anywhere on the system and am loath to discard the old backups as yet by erasing the disc trhough airport utility.

I would like to acheive the following:

1: move the old back ups to the new disc and continue building the backups on top of this

2: refer to 1!

Can anybody help?

With anticipated gratitude....

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

You are unlikely to be able to continuing using the old backups. I would not..

Archive them to USB disk is one way to keep the old backups. Of course ML airport utility is probably useless to actually have that option.

Lion you can use 5.6 utility.. and if you had 5.6 installed before upgrade it should still work. but you cannot install it fresh into ML.

See pondini instructions.. you need to understand.. external drive and network drive store the TM backup differently.
