Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I am having problems retrieving new mail when I change internet connection. I checked Connection Doctor and it seems that I could connect to SMTP servers, but not IMAP servers. When I restart Mail 6.0, I am able to connect to the IMAP servers.
I never had this problem on Lion.
Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance! 🙂

I had all the problems with Mail Application. Until Apple fix all the issues I am using a free version Sparrow;

I had this problem with two IMAP accounts, one a Google custom domain, the other a custom domain hosted by my web host. Restarting Mail seems to have fixed the problem.
Well, since late in the day (eastern Europe time) on the 2nd, I cannot access any of my three GMail accounts through Mail. I'm still using Mail 5.2.
Error message: Could not connect to this Google IMAP server.
Anyone have any ideas? How does one go about contacting a person at Google?
I am having the same issue as well. I can't connect to any of IMAP or POP server for the 2 accounts I have set.
However, if I only set 1 account, it will connect without any prob.
I think I'm having this same problem. My mail accounts are not retreiving new messages as they should. If I close down Mail and restart it, then the new messages are retrieved.
This started after installing Mountain Lion 10.8.
Same problem here.... Need to restart mail regularly to reset connection to IMAP mail server.
With me also this only started happening after the upgrade to ML.
Greetings all! Well, I must say that the mystery here is partly solved for me. With the in-house network, we just rebooted the modem-router (one unit). Then everything was fine. Very strange... VERY strange. No idea what caused it or why. Some computers worked, and others didn't. Some were IMAP, others were POP mail accounts. It's a small network consisting only of a few hubs or switches and the Modem-Router unit. It's also a wireless and uses an ADSL connection.

I'm also having this problem. Mail stops receiving new email (though I don't have any indication that this is happening). When I quit Mail and restart, all the messages that should have arrived suddenly appear. This only started happening after upgrading to Mountain Lion.

Mail suddenly stopped sending and receiving mail from both my POP accounts which had been working fine, even on Mountain Lion, although calendars and other applications have always been unable to connect to them since Mountain Lion. I went to the supplier and they applied maintenance on my account. Didn't work. I deleted both my POP accounts to create them again. Now I can't get pass the verification process. Can't find any up to date tips. I'm really frustrated and wasted so much work time on this. Did you find a solution?
Yep! same problem here too. By the I did try with Outlook 2012: same problem there too!

Be happy to find a solution.
I will look for another mail client in the meantime.
Me and a helpful soul spent hours trying to fix it. We (HE) fixed the incoming but not the outgoing so I deleted both my POP accounts (after backing them up) and started fresh with a imap account. I downsized to one account and notified my contacts. Much quicker than what we were doing.
Good luck finding another solution (hopefully)

I have installed Thunderbird 17. It works fine with more than only one account😉.
As soon as Apple fixes their own Mail Client I will work this way.
One comfort maybe: Outlook 2011 for Mac does have the same issue...👿
I have the same problem on my new macbook with OS 10.8.2.
There is no problem on the macbook with OS 10.6.8.
Sparrow Client hasn't this problem, but it has other stupid bugs.
Simply in Sparrow I can't reply to All because it hide all addresses excluding first one . And I can't switch off grouping threads 😕
Waiting for fixing bugs in Apple Mail.
I have been having problems with Mail, my iCloud account worked fine but I could not send on my SMTP servers. Checking connection doctor and it logged into the POP servers OK but not the SMTP servers.
On another computer running OSX Lion everything was OK, it seemed to be a Mountain Lion / Mail problem.
In the end I fixed it by telling Mail to only use port 25 to connect to the SMTP server, once I did that everything worked again.
Hope that helps anyone having SMTP problems.
