Time machine give me this message..it happens regularly, why and how do I fix it?

My time machine appears to work fine but now it has crashed 3 times and give me this message. "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you" It's very annoying because I continue to loose all my old data. What's happening and how can I avoid this in the future.
