Those instructions are awful. I wrote a User Tip that is much easier and does not require enabling any root user.
Thanks for getting back to me, i really appreciate it. This way sounds a lot less complicated and low risk than the other way..just to confirm when i go to the app store and type in Terminal.app there are 3 that come up, terminal here, oterminal and Openin terminal - which one is it?
Blame the organization that put it out there and file an ER via BugReporter to get it fixed. Anyway, thanks for posting the tip. FWIW, you need to add the step dealing with the Password: prompt after using return/enter key with the sudo command. Most users wouldn't understand that the admin password is needed and doesn't show on the screen.😉
It is Terminal.app on your machine. You can find it in LaunchPad inside Utilities (I think). You can also just type "terminal" into a Spotlight search.
All done. However, I don't see Apple updating that documenation any time soon. I actually filed an ER in November, 2011 asking Apple to improve the Root User procedure so that it was more like Windows' "Run as" operation. Here is Apple's response: "Please describe a scenario in which you cannot use sudo to do this?" Maybe after my new ER Apple will heed its own advice - but I doubt it 🙂
Thanks for the update. I'm not holding my breath, either.😎
Got it, so do i leave the text thats in there also or delete it?

That is a command prompt. You won't be able to delete it.
