Is it normal that Audio Airplay doesn't sync with Video?

When I first heard Mountain Lion will be able to airplay all my system sounds to my Airport Express I got really excited.

Now that I bought ML and configured everything I'm very disapointed...

Safari does not sync Audio and Video... neither does VLC-Player...

I'm not able to watch a YouTube Video without a 2s audio delay...

Am I doing something wrong or did Apple sell me something that doesn't work properly?

Thanks

ExWoW

This is normal behavior.

There are third-party solutions that have workarounds for this: Airfoil, for example, has a built in video player that compensates for the two second delay.

Airplay does not sync with the korg ms 20 app either. Im pretty ****** about this. I went through the trouble of getting an airplay, buying the ms 20, getting my stereo tuner fixed and now when i tweak a knob in the sy thesizer, it doesnt sound until two seconds later. Ridiculous. Tis seems like such a basic issue, like something that would have been a problem 10 years ago. Apple, please fix this issue asap. So now i can tweak the ms20 through the tiny ipad speakers or nothing at all. Headphones, yeah!nice >:(. Sorry but not getting the full sound of the ms 20 thoughheadphones or ipad speakers. Really surprised this hasnt been brought up before withthe ms20.

Why should we have to fix up our systems because Apple creates gaps to force us to work the way they want us to? Not syncing the audio with video in Safari at least is really dropping the ball. I'm pretty frustrated as I was using my Macbook with a projector and bluetooth reciever connected to a HiFi. It worked perfectly and since getting a Mac mini the audio was clipping. Got an Aiport express as it seemed like an elegant solution and shold maintain my Apple ecosystem. But the 2s delay is annoying as ****. Airfoil is great but I'd really rather be able to just browse videos and streams in Safari. (edit: why is h.e.l.l. a bad word??)

How does one play YouTube clips in VLC? Is it possible to click the link in Safari and have it open in VLC?

Also, I'm going to call BS on this being normal behavior, here's why:

I have a Macbook Pro 6,2 i7 running 10.8.2 that exhibits the 2.2 sec audio delay using Airplay in everything except iTunes. On the same Airport Express, an iPad, iPhone, and Macbook Air also running 10.8.2 all can play web video with no audio delay whatsoever.

I tried rebooting the Pro via USB drive with 10.6.8 and installed Airfoil. This also had audio sync issues. A new user also did not fix the issue (in the original ML system).

Just spent nearly 2 hours with Applecare and only suggestion was to reinstall the system. I am not very hopeful that this will help, but I'm going to try it. If it does fix it I'll report back here.

Another think, I tried this with an older Airport Express 802.11g and the newest one that looks like a white Apple TV and same issue on each.

Another thread suggested that using the optical audio might solve the issue--alas I don't have that option here.

Hi ExWoW. We've experienced the same: watch a video (DVD, local movie, youtube etc) and there's a delay if you stream the sound to an AirPlay speaker, receiver or AirPort Express. One can set the delay in VLC with some settings, but you need to change these every time you switch back to audio on the Mac vv. Too much bother.

Together with a friend we solved my problem by making a nifty app that launches VLC with the right delay settings and even chooses the output device. We published the app on http://airvlc.com Let me know if it solves your problem too.

Hello!

I have had the same problem as you. The audio delay is so F***ing enoying! Especially for the web browser (Youtube etc.)

But now I'm pretty satesfied, for youtube I've solved it with the safari plugin ClickToPlugin

http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/

WORKS GREAT!

And for Video files I use the Quicktime player with Perian Codec plugin.

Works good for my use anyway 🙂

Until this "feature" is useable system-wide, "Air-pray" is just yet another useless gimmick. There's frankly no real excuse why this can't be solved either. If Bluetooth headphones can be in sync, why not this? Air Play is "fizz-bin" (or snake oil for the non-Star Trek fans).

The biggest problem with the post-Steve Jobs era at Apple is that everything seems beta-like and unfinished. Nothing is fully Q-C'd and in finished form--and yet it's shoved out the door--and worst of all--it's hailed at the apple-flavored Kool-Aid events as a feature--when in the real world it's hamstrung vaporware.

I bought and installed my Airplay Express yesterday and immediately stumbled on the sound delay / sync problem when playing videos on my Macbook. It was the second dissapointment in a row after finding out that the Airport Express is not able to extend networks from non-Apple routers without stating that very clearly in the product description beforehand (see also https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4650868?start=0&tstart=0 eslewhere on this forum).

Although I managed to solve most of the sync problems now by applying the tips given in this thread, I must say I am dissapointed by Apple. It's not a cheap product and you would expect things to work smoothly, that is also the image Apple tries to uphold and it is one of the reasons why I invest in expensive Apple products. These kinds of problems should not happen too often or Apple gets an increase in dissapointed costumers and the competition is sharp these days.

Anyway after some hours of puzzling this is how I solved my sync problems:

- I downloaded and installed Airfoil for Mac but only use the Airfoil Video Player. This video player shows up if you open any movie file with Airplay. I made a shortcut (alias) to this video player in my Application folder as the video player is not easy to find using Finder. I mostly use the video player when I want to stream videos with Safari. Open the link with the Airfoil Video Player and any streaming video I tried so far played perfectly without delay.

- For YouTube video's I subscribed as a tester for HTML5 through this link: http://www.youtube.com/html5. Allows you to play most YouTube videos in Safari just like you normally would without delay. Doesn't work for all video's though but use the Airfoil Video Player for those video's that don't work.

- For video files I want to play from my harddrive I try to open as many of them in Quicktime. Videos opened in Quicktime play through AirPlay without delay. Download and install free codec pack here which allow you to play most videos on Quicktime: http://perian.en.softonic.com/mac. Of course also install Flip4Mac: http://flip4mac-3.en.softonic.com/mac

- For those video files that still won't run in QuickTime I thankfully use AirVLC as posted by user bjornvanraaij in this thread. Download here: http://airvlc.com. Perfect little app that brushes away any AirPlay delay in videos played over VLC.

- Music played over Spotify or any other application on my Mac (so sound only, no visuals) I just play with delay, it doesn't matter as long as there's no visuals.

So it's quite a multi-faceted approach to the problem using a lot of 3rd party apps to compensate for Apple's frustrating fails with AirPlay and the Airport Express, but at least my syncing problems mostly belong to the past now. Thanks all for your useful comments and solutions!
