Text message "delivered"

Sometimes when I send a text it shows up blue and says "delivered" below the text.

Apparently only when I send to phones that are running iOS 5. I'm assuming that this means that the text war actually received by the phone that I sent it to. Does this mean that the phone I sent it to is actually functional? What if the phone I sent it to is non-functional? Does it know?

Other times it's green and says "Sent as text message"? What does this mean?

When you send a text message to another iOS device it will send as an imessage as long as the other device's imessage is turned on and signed into. When the text says deliverd it just means that it was sent out, if the phone you sent it to actually recieved the text your end will say recieved rather than delivered. If your text sometimes turns green it means either the device you sent it to is not an iOS device or it's imessage is not enabled.
