My MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.4 takes at least 30 seconds to go to sleep all of a sudden. How can I fix this problem?

Suddenly my MacBook takes forever to go to sleep. It has done this in the past, and I admit I don't know what I'm doing. I googled info and found a site which instructed me to do something in the terminal, and it worked. Unfortunately the problem has reoccured and I cannot find this page again. I have looked up other support info this time and have tried to reset the power manager, which did nothing. I really need help because this is driving me crazy.

Part of the instructions for the SMC reset involve putting the computer to sleep. When I did this step, Sleep occurred instantaneously, instead of the usual 30-sec wait. I did the SMC reset anyway, but I'm not sure I actually reset SMC. There is no real feedback that the reset actually occurred. After restarting, Sleep mow takes 30 seconds to occur. So no help there.

I have done the safe boot start up (by holding the shift key) twice now and it does fix the problem instantly. However, once I turn my computer off and back on for the next time I want to use it, the issue reoccurs. Am I going to need to start my computer up while holding the shift key every time, or is there another solution? I feel like there is a program running in the background, but I'm not sure how to fix that..

If none of Dale's suggestions worked out for you and the suggestions mentioned in the "More Like This" section, both you & emilyf12 need to call Apple Care and get a case number. Otherwise if out out warranty, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.

You can also research for a solution on YouTube's "How To" video tutorial site and the Do-It-Yourself Laptop Repair website.
