When I try and update my software this message appears. Message reads: You need 6.01 GB of available space to download and install the updates. To increase available space, remove files from your startup disk, and then try again.

Trash and delete some data.

Move big Libraries (iPhoto, iTunes and iMovie) to an external drive.
