Can you boot to your Recovery disk? Command and R keys held down on boot. What you describe is likely more related to the graphics card but if you can boot into the Recovery partition, I'd like you to use Disk Utility to verify your hard drive and repair it if needed. And, while you're there, go ahead and repair permissions. Then reboot and see if you still have the pattern. If so, it might be a GPU problem.

Try it and see...

Thank you for replying! Ok, I tried holding down the command and r keys, a blank white screen appeared, so I shut down and tried again and this time the screen went from white, to blue and then what seems to be the boot up screen. The screen still has the diagonal boxes, but this time there are two vertical lines of boxes and one along the bottom. There are also the grey blob boxes, which I think is the apple, an the mouse is also present too, in blob form. Actually right now though, the mouse is doing that rainbow swirly thing. So, this is what I get after booting with the command key and r key held down

Thanks, Erin
